用OED查了"Oceania"、"Australasian"等字 簡單整理其中界定疆界的部份 (不知為何單用"Australia"搜尋不到東西) [Oceania] OED的定義:(A collective name for) the islands and island-groups of the Pacific Ocean and its adjacent seas, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, and sometimes also Australasia and the Malay archipelago. 1857 Chambers's Information for People (new ed.) II. 296/1 Oceania..naturally divides itself into three great sections{em}Malaysia, Australasia, and Polynesia. 在1857年Chamber先生的界定裡 Oceania(大洋洲)是包括馬來西亞、澳洲跟玻利尼西亞的 (當然當時的的地區劃分可能跟今天有些不同) [Australasian] OED的定義:A. adj. Of or belonging to Australasia. B. n. A native or colonist of Australasia. 1756 DE BROSSES Hist. Navig. aux Terres Australes Pref. 2 La division de la terre australe y e'toit faite, relativement a` ces trois mers, en Magellanique, Polyne'sie, et Australasie. 1766 CALLANDER Terra Australis I. 49 (transl. De Brosses) The first [division] in the Indian Ocean south of Asia, which for this reason we shall call Australasia. 1937 D. COWIE N.Z. from Within 253 [New Zealand] refuses to allow the term ‘ Australasian’ to be used in her hearing. 我看不懂1756年那段 推測應該指澳洲包括了Magellanique、玻利尼西亞及澳洲主大陸 有請高手指正 1766年那段點出"Australia"的字義 即"位於亞洲南方的區域" "austral"有南方的意思 故澳洲一詞也有"Austral-asia"的拼法 所以推測應該不會有"澳大利亞之洲"的用法 1937年那段說紐西蘭人不爽被叫澳洲人 由此也許可反推當時紐西蘭是被納進澳洲的 只是後來抗議生效才重新劃定疆界 -------------------------------------------------------------- 這裡只是簡單整理英文的詞源 還不包括其他語言的定義 加上沒有當時的地圖來明確指稱區域 所以只能就字面上來探討 基本上Oceania與Australia所涵蓋的區域常重疊到 這可能是後來會混用的原因 就我看到的用法裡 早期的用法多是在標誌區域 有的是航海目的、有的是科學上的劃界 至於政治區域的界定倒沒看到 (1937年紐西蘭那條就明顯有政治意味) 所以如果要討論Oceania和Australia 最好別去脈絡討論 先界定要討論的背景與方向會比較好聚焦.. --
