我第一個感覺是這樣（完全沒有文法佐證，還請各路高手指點）...
1. 絕大多數的情形都是用for，指「第一次時」
I tried sushi for the first time yesterday.
2. 曾看過學生把for the first time和at first (一開始)搞錯
At first I didn't like sushi, but I like it very much now.
3. 我唯一能想到使用at是下列的狀況：
She was amazed at the first time the child spoke.
這個句型其實有點詭異 XD 因為我最直覺會想說：
She was amazed when the child first spoke. OR
She was amazed when the child spoke for the first time.
at其實是接著amazed (可以google一下緊接著at或其他preposition的動詞)
the first time是下一個adv clause的開始
所以這裡不該把"at the first time"看成一個單位，而是
amazed at / the first time ....
簡言之for the first time是個片語，我基本上不會用at the first time
我剛還估狗到一個神奇的例句: He won the match at the first time.
我覺得這個句子很拗口。中文可以說「第一次就上手」，
但英文不會這樣表達，可以改寫成He won the match on his first attempt.
另一個常見的句型是：
I fell in love with you the first time I saw you. (no at)
(又是一個the first time...的adv clause句型)
