我第一个感觉是这样（完全没有文法佐证，还请各路高手指点）...
1. 绝大多数的情形都是用for，指「第一次时」
I tried sushi for the first time yesterday.
2. 曾看过学生把for the first time和at first (一开始)搞错
At first I didn't like sushi, but I like it very much now.
3. 我唯一能想到使用at是下列的状况：
She was amazed at the first time the child spoke.
这个句型其实有点诡异 XD 因为我最直觉会想说：
She was amazed when the child first spoke. OR
She was amazed when the child spoke for the first time.
at其实是接着amazed (可以google一下紧接着at或其他preposition的动词)
the first time是下一个adv clause的开始
所以这里不该把"at the first time"看成一个单位，而是
amazed at / the first time ....
简言之for the first time是个片语，我基本上不会用at the first time
我刚还估狗到一个神奇的例句: He won the match at the first time.
我觉得这个句子很拗口。中文可以说「第一次就上手」，
但英文不会这样表达，可以改写成He won the match on his first attempt.
另一个常见的句型是：
I fell in love with you the first time I saw you. (no at)
(又是一个the first time...的adv clause句型)
