You just use it.
If you read the original paper of general relativity of
Einstein in 1916, you will find Einstein also just use
it. The important is physics.
Hermann Weyl is a great mathematician and
wrote a book of relativity.
But he cannot invent relativity.
Maybe the problem is
Could you use variation method correctly?
