He’s an aggressive shot hunter on the court, and I love the way that he went about improving his passing ability out of ball screens. Until this season at Kansas, he had never stagnated, continually working his way up a steady trajectory to the top of his recruiting class. It’s exceptionally hard to find players who are this creative, who can make shots at this level at such a young age and who have at least demonstrated the ability to pass and defend at some point, even if those skills have been inconsistent. Yes, there are questions that Peterson needs to answer for NBA teams. In high school, he showed that he was a good ballhandler who counters defenders well with his herky-jerky actions. He can keep his dribble not only alive, but continue to threaten defenses with how creative he is out of ball screens. He understands how on-ball defenders are trying to play him, either by keeping him out of the middle or by playing him straight up, and can adjust. He did not get many true high ball screens in college, but scouts who dig into the tape will see that there is skill there. He can split coverages with sudden moves and is great at stringing out defenders to force switches with patient probes. Peterson generally plays methodically off two feet before exploding to the areas of the court he wants to get to. He loves the inside-out dribble and hang dribbles before exploding by his man. His inside-out is particularly nasty; he separates and freezes defenders with it. But he also can put it together off multiple between-the-legs crossovers and has several quick crossover moves. He has no problem putting it behind his back to stop on a dime. He seems to decelerate well, then re-accelerates off that. He is constantly changing gears and has a great blend of change of pace and change of direction. He has a unique combination of long strides and shiftiness so that once he beats a player off the bounce, he eats up space quickly. He’s great at using his deceleration to slow down but then will still use those long strides to extend. He uses that 6-10 1/2 wingspan well, often getting to the rim as opposed to floating away from it. He takes bumps around the rim well and absorbs contact with ease. He can finish with both his left and right hands with touch. He made 70 percent of his half-court attempts at the rim at Prolific Prep and while playing for Phenom United on the Adidas circuit. He’s very comfortable getting to a bevy of floaters and push shots in the middle, making those at a solid clip. He took about two floaters per game, per Synergy, making about 41 percent of them in the small sample. The gathers into these shots show room for growth. He can also stop on a dime and pull up. He gets to side-step and stepback midrange jumpers. His percentage on midrange jumpers was not great, as he hit 37.1 percent of his midrange pull-up jumpers in AAU last year and 26.3 percent at Prolific Prep. But he showed growth taking about three of those shots per game at Kansas this year, making 42.9 percent of them, per Synergy. Everything comes out in one motion. He has a clean release and follow-through. Peterson tends to take them off the hop but can also 1-2 step into shots. He gets his feet underneath him and fires away. He’ll shoot behind dribble-handoffs or soft ball-screen coverages. At Prolific Prep, he drilled 42 percent of his pull-up 3-point attempts on nearly five per game, per Synergy. Drilled 47.7 percent of his catch-and-shoot 3s, per Synergy, on about four attempts per game. He hits them off movement at a really high level. He was a seriously impressive ball-screen playmaker for his teammates. He has finally started reading the second and third levels of defenses and attacking accordingly. Because he slowed down how he plays, he opened up passing angles everywhere and had the vision to hit them. He understands how to manipulate the low man to open cross-court kickouts to the wing or corner. He’ll jump-pass to gather with a plan, then has the reactivity to make a choice on how to find the open man. He also seems to get better at this as the game goes on. In high school, it was almost like he was computing how the defense was playing him early and using his scoring to win that way. However, he threw more impressive passes than what the numbers say, and the high school rates are much better. He’s good on the ball and has quick twitch to recover and stay in plays. He’ll sometimes get overaggressive on closeouts and with pokes but almost always seems to get back in the play because of his motor. He’s switchable for someone who plays as a combo guard. He averaged 1.4 steals per game this season at Kansas, 2.7 steals per game on the AAU circuit and nearly two steals per game in high school. Peterson was also over a block per game at Prolific Prep in high school. He’s effective as a low man defensively as a rotational rim protector for a perimeter player. He will jump straight up and down and explode upward into a vertical position while retreating to contest shots. He’s not Anthony Edwards or Donovan Mitchell in terms of explosiveness. He’ s ahead of guys like Devin Booker and Jamal Murray in this respect, and you don’t have to possess elite explosiveness to be an elite scoring guard. Peterson is absolutely an above-average NBA athlete, but just not at the very top end. There are myriad factors you could point to as to why, from Kansas playing three non-shooters around him, allowing teams to condense the paint, to his injuries, to his off-ball role not allowing for many true ball-screen sets. But he averaged just under two shots at the rim per game in half-court settings, which is more in line with a true off-ball wing as opposed to a primary playmaker. He’s not immune to taking extremely tough ones in the midrange and when pulling up from 3. He was only 5 of 30 from 3 out of ball screens this year and generally took some difficult ones that were heavily contested. Also, two-thirds of his catch-and-shoot jumpers this year were contested, per Synergy, which is among the highest marks in the class. Given his growth as a passer as a high school senior, there’s every reason to believe in him improving once he gets out of Kansas’ clogged spacing. His mechanics are too good, and the 3-point results are too strong to ignore. And yet, he could get streaky in high school. His midrange percentages in high school were never particularly strong, although they improved at Kansas and I have less concern because he also has a nice floater game. Still, for the on-ball, ball-dominant role, Peterson will need to be an elite shooter, not just a great one. I did not think his passing was quite that bad, as his teammates often blew assists for him when he made the right reads. Still, he had quite a few moments when he would miss reads in favor of taking tough midrange shots or floaters. It comes back to Peterson not getting a ton of paint touches this year. We’ve mentioned how Kansas’ spacing was quite bad and didn’t allow for those paint touches as often as, say, Keaton Wagler in Illinois’ immaculately spaced offense. But scouts are still trying to wrap their heads around how much pressure Peterson will put on defenses as a driver. He tends to reach, and it can sometimes result in him getting stuck behind the play after going for pokes and steals. Again, you can easily point to the fact that it felt like the team never got totally comfortable playing with Peterson because he was in and out of the lineup. A variation of a question that multiple scouts have asked is, “Can he consistently deal with the grind of an 82-game season?” Will he be someone who misses games here and there?
