The former, on the other hand, is coming off of his best season as a pro: a productive, efficient, and unselfish campaign as one of Sacramento’s usage leaders. Gay hasn’t transformed his game so much as seen it through to maturity. Although the areas of the floor where he operates most frequently have shifted over time, Gay’s basic skills and approach have remained more or less the same. We’ve seen Gay defend well for stretches or games at a time, though too often he’s caught standing upright with his hands down or lulled a full step out of position. Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that, Lawson wasn’t in any big hurry to get back from the All-Star break. Or that Lawson’s production and efficiency slipped during his second straight lottery season in 2014-15. Or that his Defensive Real Plus-Minus rating plummeted to 66th among point guards in 2014-15. Lawson’s primary skills – pushing the pace, breaking down defenses off the dribble, instinctively distributing the ball and knocking down three-point shots – are all valued in GM Daryl Morey’s vision of the game.
