Leptin
The ob gene (mice) specifies a 16-kDa protein called leptin,
which is synthesized in adipocytes and acts as a hormone,
binding to a specific receptor in the brain.
Leptin evidently functions as a “
lipostat”,
sensing the amount of fat stored in the adipocytes.
When fat stores are adequate,
leptin levels are high,
and the signaling system controls feeding behavior to limit fat deposition.
During starvation,
leptin levels decline,
which promotes feeding and fat storage within the adipocytes.
