现在式
在正式英文里, 当你要争论/辩论"事实"时。
"事实"一定会是现在式, "事实"不可能成为"过去式"。
正式文章的写作连讲英文的人也不一定搞得很清楚
例如你会说
Einstein is smart. (This is the fact.)
爱因斯坦是聪明的 (这是事实, 所以是现在式)
Einstein was the smartest student when he was studying in the ETH Zurich.
爱因斯坦在过去正在ETH苏黎世念书时, 他是最聪明的学生
(这是在说他叙述的状态/故事)
Five times ten is fifty. (Mathematics is always the fact)
5乘以10是50 (数学本身就是事实, 除非是在说某个定论不再是事实因为是错的)
Einstein proposed a famous equation that is
"The E is equal to the product of the M and the square of the C".
爱因斯坦提出了着名的式子那就是
E=MC^2, 除非有人证明这是彻底错误的
Before the discovery of the electron, the atom was the basic unit.
在还没发现电子之前原子(过去)是基本单位
所以原子(现在)是基本单位吗? 这不是事实了, 不可能会用现在式is去叙述 atom

"收到一封邮件"是一个过去的动作(已经发生了)
The mail system blocked your mail becuse it has an unsecured attachment.
挡邮件是一个过去的动作(已经发生了)
原因是里头有个未加密的附件, 这个原因是"事实"
如果你去丧事(mourning)
你要用过去式...去形容那个往生的人
如果你用现在式吊念死掉的人, 其他人就会瞪你, 然後就会发生很可怕的事情...
Our dear XYZ was the sweetest guy.
