标题[文法] in, after, ago, later区分

今天被学生问到一题题目，
没办法解释的很清楚，
希望板上高手分享观念，
题目如下。
Jenny and mom went shopping this afternoon,
and they came back with a lot of bags _________.
A)in three hours
B)after three hours
C)three hours ago
第四个选项我忘了..
我的想法是：
以国中生简单的文法观念来看in+时间用於未来式，
所以A不选。
如果想表达应改为three hours later.
此题的答案为B，after+时间用於过去式没问题，
但为何C不行?
若解释成他们下午去逛街，三小时前带了一堆战利品回来，
这样不能选C吗?
