How Beginning Writers Can Avoid Coming Off as Pretentious
新科作家应如何避免「矫饰」
Kevin Purdy —
凯文‧普尔帝
If you only rarely get the chance to write for a public audience, you pieces
can very well end up reading like a first-year Comparative Literature major,
eager to prove your skills and range.
如果你平时鲜少有机会写公开性的文章,那一旦有此机会,你极可能会像文学比较班上的
大学生一样急切希望显露锋芒,而过於表现。
Noted author V.S. Naipaul offers seven-step boot camp for breaking down your
writing and instilling discipline.
着名作家 V‧S‧Naipaul 提出了七项规则的「写作训练营」,让你在写作时更能严谨分
析、更自律。
Naipaul, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001, states that you
can't write long sentences with big words until you know how to write with
small words, in small sentences. Each sentence, too, needs to make a clear
statement, adding to the previous statement.
2001年诺贝尔文学奖得主 Naipaul 表示,一位作家一定要先会用简单的字写短句,才能
用艰涩的字来造长句。同时,每一句都应以上一句为根基,清楚表达重点。
It's good advice and a refreshing tonic for those looking to remind
themselves of the fundamentals. Naipaul provides an action plan to put this
routine into place:
对那些在基础写作方面需要点醒的人们,这是项令人双眼一亮的好建议。Naipaul 还提供
了一套行动计画来协助人们锻练这些步骤。
以下为 Naipaul 「写作训练营」的七项规则:
1. Do not write long sentences. A sentence should not have more than ten or
twelve words.
别写长句。一句话不应超过10-12个字。
2. Each sentence should make a clear statement. It should add to the
statement that went before. A good paragraph is a series of clear, linked
statements.
每一句话都应清楚陈述其重点,并与前句有所连结或补充。一个好的段落是由一系列清楚
且连贯的句子所构成的。
3. Do not use big words. If your computer tells you that your average word is
more than five letters long, there is something wrong. The use of small words
compels you to think about what you are writing. Even difficult ideas can be
broken down into small words.
别用艰涩的字。如果电脑显示你每字的平均字元数超过5,那就一定有问题。用简单的短
字会逼你去仔细思考你想写的内容。许多难以理解的想法其实是能以短字表达的。
4. Never use words whose meaning you are not sure of. If you break this rule
you should look for other work.
别用任何你不确定其意义的字。如果违犯这一条,那你还是另谋高就较好。
5. The beginner should avoid using adjectives, except those of colour, size
and number. Use as few adverbs as possible.
新科作家应避免使用形容词,除了颜色、大小、及数量之类。尽量少用副词。
6. Avoid the abstract. Always go for the concrete.
新科作家应避抽像而趋具体。
7. Every day, for six months at least, practice writing in this way. Small
words; short, clear, concrete sentences. It may be awkward, but it’s
training you in the use of language. It may even be getting rid of the bad
language habits you picked up at the university. You may go beyond these
rules after you have thoroughly understood and mastered them.
花至少六个月时间每天练习这样写作:用简单短字,写清楚且具体的短句。一开始可能会
感觉很不便,但这会训练你使用语言的能力,甚至能让你摆脱一些求学时得到的坏习惯。
你得先清楚了解这些规则并能将其运用自如,才能开始跳脱这些规则。
