Place : The village "where" she lived... d. Reason : (The reason)"why" she left... e. Time : (The time)"when" he arrived... f. manner : (The way) "how" she did it... In the case of subject and object(44a,b), the need to specify the case-role of the missing noun is real, given that typically "a man" can be either subject, object, or indirect object. In the case of examples(44c,d,e,f), the need for case-role assignment is to some extent superfluous. This is so because the head nouns themselves--"village/reason/time/way"--are semantically constraining. By their very meaning, they tend to suggest the case-role of the missing noun-- location, reason, time, manner, respectively. 9.3.4 The Relative Subordinator Strategy Another relativization strategy in English dispenses with case-marked relative-pronouns, and employs the neutral "subordinator"--that--at the beginning of the relative clause.This strategy cannot be used freely for all case-roles. It is employed most commonly with direct or some indirect object roles, and less commonly with subjects and adverbial roles. Some examples: Cf.44 (45) a. subject: The man "that"stopped... b. object : The man "that" she married... c. Place : *The village "that" she lived... d. Time : *The time "that" he arrived... e. Manner : ?(The way) "that" she did it... f. Reason : (The reason)"that" he left... g. Indirect object: The woman that he lived with... When this strategy is available, choosing the invariant "that" over a case-marked relative-pronoun is a matter of considerable variation along lines of dialect, style, age, register, and individual preference. What is more, the use of the invariant "that" contributes nothing to "recovering" the case-role of the missing referent.
