原題目是: 1.There are exaclty two philosophers who love the same philosopher.
我想需要用到quantifier 的原因不只是因為習慣這麼用,
而是這題真的需要 for all & for some, 如果不用, 很難表達。
你給的問題在沒有表達出 'exactly two',
一般用的一階邏輯是會用一個identity和quantifier的,
( (Ex)(Ey)(Ez)(Px & Py & Pz & ~x=y & Lxz & Lyz)
& ~(Ex)(Ey)(Eu)(Ez)(Px & Py & Pu & Pz & ~x=y & ~y=u &~x=u & Lxz & Lyz &Luz))
之類的, 或用傳統Russellian 的那個化簡方法。
但你給的式子只說明: Let x, y, w, be philosopher, let z be whatever,
x and y loves w and if z loves w as well, he will not be a philosopher,
也就是說, 也許x和y是同一個人, 那麼你只會有一個哲學家愛w, 而不是兩個。
即便你用的是Tractarian language, (我假設你是好了),
也就是by convention all variables denote different objects,
仍然有問題, 因為你的式子會說,
there are (at least) three philosophers, amongst whom
x and y loves w (the same philosophers), and no other philosopher loves w,
但這樣你直接排除了 w 有可能就是x或是y其中的一個,
(e.g. in a model in which there are only two philosophers)
另外也沒有說明有沒有可能有另外三個哲學家同時愛另外一個哲學家的情形。
(也就是有兩個哲學家愛一個哲學家, 另外有三哲學家愛一個哲學家, 總共七個)
要避免後面那種情形, 除非你的Let同時也有 for all (universal quantifier)
的功能, 但這樣你的 Let Px, Py ... 會是ambiguous,
同時可以代成 for some, 也同時可以代成 for all ,
我想這在任何formal system裡都要避免的。
