※ 引述《EVA03 (初號機,貳號機都被人用了)》之銘言： : 王道還：中研院研究人員，翻譯一些科普書籍， : 雖然語氣中帶有些文言味（他有在科學人上寫專欄） : 但是算相當嚴謹的翻譯者 文言味也就罷了，以下出自他翻的《第三種猩猩》。 以下兩例摘錄自序言。 In fact, our situation is not hopeless. 說真格的，咱們的處境還不到"非洲土著午夜獵豬圖"的一片漆黑。 If that were true, we would have nothing to learn from the past except how virtuous we once were and how evil we have now become. 果真如此，那我們除了感嘆"何昔日之芳草兮，今直為此蕭艾也"， 無法從過去學到任何教訓。 明明是淺白的文字，可以直譯， 但王道還卻喜歡用中國典故， 還用可能很多人沒聽過的漆黑笑話典故來翻譯， 有點難理解。 在本書中譯本第九章，215頁處，提到雄性花亭鳥以外來裝飾 物來增加性吸引力，和男人類似。下面這兩句的翻譯感覺怪怪 的，摘錄如下： 原文：The parellel between bowerbirds and humans may be even closer if, as friends of mine who are into sports cars assure me, duller young men tend to decorate themselves with fancier sports cars. 王譯：我有一位開跑車的朋友，他一定要我相信：平庸的年輕 男子，總想弄台花俏的跑車打點自己，如果那是真的，花亭鳥 與人類就更相像了。 我的理解是：作者的朋友（複數）喜歡開跑車這件事，讓作者 相信平庸的年輕男子總喜歡弄台花俏的跑車打點自己。而非 朋友（單數）希望說服作者什麼事情。有強者可以幫我解惑嗎？ 中譯版十五章，310頁的地方，明顯漏譯了一段話，而且還刪 掉了原書中原印歐語''放屁''一詞演變的圖片，我覺得這樣的漏 譯不太恰當，因為這個例子滿有趣的，對作者論證提供了佐證 ，不能理解刪掉不譯的原因。 原文：By such method, linguists have been able to reconstruct much of the grammar and nearly two thousand word roots of the mother tongue, term Proto-Indo-European but usually abbreviated as PIE. That''s not to say that all words in modern Ind0-European languages are descended from PIE: most are not, because there have been so many new inventions or borrowings (like the root ''sheep'' replacing the old PIE root ''owis'' in English).
