When I was a junior, (11th grade). This play is based on the infamous "Salem Witch Trial" in 1692. Therefore, most of the name mentioned in the book are actually real person and real events. After the trial, people did seriously consider what had happened during that time? Therefore they made some changes, such as supernatural phenomenon cannot be used as evidence in the court, etc. Moreover, this is one of the critical events that seperate the connection between the church and the government. About the play itself, it raise an interesting question regarding "Honor vs. life". Which one is more important to you? Notice that there were 19 people hang in the span of four days. Before that, they were asking the same question: Are you a witch? If you confess, then we will post your confession on the door of church. Then you are free to go. If you don't confess, then you will be hang. (Great, guilty before proven innocent). SO I suppose it depends on which one you believe is more important. Well, regarding this issue, I especially like that line John Proctor said in Act 4, with a cry of his whole soul: "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Becasue I lie and sign myself to lie! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my NAME!" (And then he was hang within two hours or so...) --
