標題[題目] 題目求解

Ponderning by the river, I saw the shepherd boy and one sheep ______ walking
along the bank suddenly fell into the river.

我寫C但答案是D，用that的話這樣直接加walking感覺好奇怪，請各位幫忙解答，謝謝！

一開始也是這樣想，不知是不是因為這裡that不能省略的關係？
不然直覺直接省略關代+ving(考慮動詞變化)是印象中常做的事

答案揭曉:原句為Ponderning by the river, I saw the shepherd boy and one sheep "
that were" walking
along the bank suddenly fell into the river.
但應該是省略 that were 變成 walking
可是that 不能省(關代混淆)，只省略were 就變成 that walking

後來問了以前的班導師，他給了這說法覺得比較合理(轉述並整理他的說法，以下)
To the best of my knowledge, there are usually three choices in the TOEIC ques
tions. If there are only three choices, then C will be OK. If there are four c
hoices, D seems to be a better choice, because it serves not only to avoid the
confusion of relative pronouns but also to avoid the confusion involved in th
e "saw + walking" or "saw + fell" interpretation.
