In observing the Los Angeles Clippers through three games of their series against the San Antonio Spurs, where the Clippers trail the Spurs 2-1 in the series, Los Angeles seems to be showing signs of fatigue both by the eye test and the data might support what the eye test is seeing. 作為人類來說,我們的身體在一定程度的作為後是一定要休息的。看了前3場的比賽,我發 覺到快艇漸漸的展現出了疲勞的姿態,而我可能也有一些數據是可以支持我的觀察。 Before the series even began, it was noted that the Spurs had a deeper bench and relied on anywhere from nine to ten rotation players consistently. Meanwhile, the Clippers were built starter heavy, and Jamal Crawford was usually only their main player coming off the bench with consistent minutes. Through three games against the Spurs, the Clippers’ starters have played a bulk of the core minutes, and the only time they’ve been able to get a decent amount of rest, is when either team held a lead above 15 points. 在這系列賽開始之前,我們知道馬刺在替補上是較有深度的,他們用的是9到10人的輪值。 快艇方面,他們的先發陣容堅強,而Jamal Crawford可以說是唯一個替補是有一定時間的 上場。這3場比賽當中,快艇的先發打了大部份的時間,而他們唯一可以好好休息的機會 來自於某一隊有了15分以上的領先。 Friday in San Antonio, both during and after the Spurs’ 100-73 drubbing of the Clippers, I asked several media members if they saw what I was seeing – the Clippers’ starters just flat out looked exhausted for long stretches of the game. Though there’s no metric to measure if a player is playing at 0 to 100% of their energy level, there is the minutes per game metric and how much distance they’re running. The first chart below displays the Clippers’ six core players’ (Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, J.J. Redick, Matt Barnes, Jamal Crawford) minutes both in the regular season and through three games of this series with the Spurs. I also included the Spurs’ five starters (Tony Parker, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter) minutes in both the regular season and playoffs. 我們就來看看數據吧。第一個圖表是快艇主要6位選手在常規賽以及季後賽的平均上場時 間。我也附上了馬刺先發的隊伍平均。 快艇主力先發平均上場時間(附加馬刺先發隊伍平均) http://goo.gl/Vcd91n As you can see, not only are a majority of the Clippers’ core players playing more minutes, but they’re playoff minutes. That means more energy expended, more focus, more diving to the floor for loose balls, or diving into the stands with everything on the line in the postseason. Meanwhile, the Spurs are still able to maintain their regular season minutes to a close level of their playoff minutes, because they can bring in four to five guys off the bench for a large chunk of time. 如同你看到的,快艇大部分先發主力的上場時間都比馬刺來的高,而我們是在說季後賽 時間。這就代表會有更多的體力消耗,需要更多的專註力以及更多高張力的表現。而馬刺 卻始終能在季後賽維持他們跟常規賽差不多的上場時間,因為他們能擺上4到5個替補在場 上讓他們打更多的時間。 In viewing the Spurs’ starters minutes per game, it still should be noted that Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich is easing Tiago Splitter back into his normal minutes game-by-game, while Tony Parker’s playing time has been inconsistent due to his right Achilles injury. 當然Pop也在慢慢的讓Tiago回到他一般正常的上場時間,而Parker的時間也因為他的腳傷 所以非常的不穩定。 After Game 2 in Los Angeles, Paul and Griffin had each played over 80 of the 101 total minutes of the two games, with Game 2 going into overtime. In Friday’s blowout, Paul and Griffin were finally able to get a full quarter of rest in the fourth, but it came at the expense of a loss for their team. As Parker said Friday after the win, it was good for the team to win in the fashion they did, because it allowed him to have to play just 25 minutes while the team still won the game. Tim Duncan also mentioned how the win gave him the opportunity to play just 30 minutes, after he played 44 minutes in Wednesday’s overtime game. 第2場的比賽後,Paul跟Griffin總共都打了101分鐘之中的80分鐘(有加上overtime)。在 禮拜五的比賽他們終於可以好好有一節的休息時間,不過這也讓他們輸掉了比賽。Parker 在賽後也說了,他們可以以這種方式贏得比賽是好的,因為他最後只上了25分鐘而已。 Duncan也提到這次的勝利給他機會只上了30分鐘,畢竟他在禮拜三的加時賽下來總共打了 44分鐘。 Over the season, the Clippers had the worst bench in terms of minutes played, as their bench was ranked 30th in the league in only playing 15.4 minutes per game. Through three games of this series, the Clippers’ bench is averaging just 9.3 minutes per game. Meanwhile, the Spurs’ bench was the best in the league in terms of minutes played, as the average San Antonio bench player played 20.8 minutes per game, while those minutes have been reduced to 14.5 minutes through their first three playoff games. 球季下來,快艇的替補群在出賽時間上是最慘烈的,他們以場均15.4分鐘的時間排名全 NBA第30名。季後賽的前三場比賽下來他們更只上場了9.3分鐘而已。而馬刺的替補則是 全NBA最好的,有著場均20.8分鐘的上場時間,不過當然季後賽的時候那些時間降低到了 14.5分鐘。 Through the SportVU data provided by the NBA, an interesting stat to look at which could relate to fatigue is the amount of distance traveled per game. First, let’s take a look at the chart below, which shows how many miles per game the Clippers and Spurs have ran through each game of this series, and what they’re running for both the season and playoffs. 接下來我們用SportVU提供的數據來看看疲勞是否跟場上的奔跑距離有關。以下的圖表 顯示了兩隊在季後賽三場比賽的各別奔跑距離,以及常規賽和季後賽的平均。 兩隊比賽的奔跑距離(單位:英里) http://goo.gl/Uim2NG In looking at the regular miles ran, the Spurs ran 1.2 more miles than the Clippers this season in 82 games. A reason for that is due to the Spurs running a motion based offense. In the motion offense, not only do the point guards touch and handle the ball, but so do the wings and the bigs. There’s a ton of off the ball movement in setting screens, coming off curls, and making backdoor cuts. 馬刺總共在常規賽跑了比快艇多出了1.2英里。當然其中一個理由是因為馬刺在進攻上的 跑動。進攻的時候,不只是只有控球後衛會碰到球,其他像是搖擺人跟中鋒都會有很多 碰球的機會。馬刺在球的轉移以及移動上是很多的,不管是在設置掩護或者是開後門的時 候。 When you think of the Clippers’ offense, it’s a point guard heavy offense where Paul brings the ball up the floor, either waits for Redick to go around screens and get open, delivers it to Griffin in the high post or on the elbow, or Paul may run a pick-and-roll with Jordan or Griffin and either Paul will shoot it, find someone open on the perimeter, or feed one of his slashing bigs. Again, it’s an offense that doesn’t rely on a ton of off the ball movement outside of Redick. 當你看看快艇的進攻手段,都是注重於控球後衛的一手策劃。Paul會持球上來然後等待 Redick來設掩護,這時他可能有空擋可以把球傳給Griffin來進行進攻,或者他會跟 Griffin或Jordan跑一個擋拆戰術,接下來看是要自己投籃,或者是傳給外線的空擋,或 者也可以交給那兩個猛烈的大個子。不管怎樣,快艇的進攻都不是注重於球的傳導。 Now, as you can see from each of the first three games of the playoffs, where the Spurs are running 0.3 miles more per game than in the regular season, it’s forcing the Clippers to also run more and in each game, San Antonio has continued to keep moving more than the Clippers. This could easily lend itself to fatigue as the Clippers as a team are being forced to not only operate their offense, but also chase the Spurs’ shooters and moving big men all over the floor on defense. 現在再來看看數據,季後賽的三場比賽中,馬刺都有著比常規賽多出0.3英里的跑動。這 也迫使快艇也要跟著跑動的更多。馬刺持續的跑得比快艇多,這會讓快艇除了要跑自己的 進攻外,也不得不去追著馬刺的射手群,讓他們的大個子在防守的時候需要移動的更多。 An example of this happened Friday. Then, Danny Green began a play by standing on the right corner three. Redick already looked exhausted, but Green sprinted quickly to the opposite corner three and Redick was trailing so far behind, that Green was fed an open pass and drilled the corner three. A large part of the Spurs sinking 10 of their 24 three pointers at home was because the Clippers often were late on their defensive rotations, and some of that can likely be attributed to fatigue. 禮拜五的比賽中,其中一個Danny Green的角落三分就是個好例子。Green原本站在右角落 的三分線上,Redick已經看起來很累了,但是Green迅速的跑到另外一邊的三分線並且接 到了一個傳球空擋,然後投進了一個3分。那時候的Redick已經在防守上落後Green許多。 馬刺之所以可以24投10進他們的三分球,一個非常重要的原因就是快艇在防守上處於落後, 而疲勞可能就是原因之一。 Lastly, I’ve pulled how much more the Clippers’ core players are having to run through each game of the playoffs, compared to what their bodies are accustomed to running during the season. 最後來看看快艇的主力在常規賽與季後賽的跑動距離有什麼不一樣。 快艇主力在常規賽與季後賽的跑動距離(單位:英里) http://goo.gl/qWnDuY When you think about a shooter like Redick, who is hoisting up 6.3 three pointers per game and who is relied upon by the Clippers to put points on the scoreboard, he’s having to run almost 0.6 more miles per game in this series, compared to what his body is used to during the regular season. On offense, with Leonard guarding him, he’s having to fight that much harder through screens to try to get open, or when he does catch the ball, he may have to throw in a pump fake or put the ball on the floor to clear some space for himself. 想想看一個像是Redick的射手,目前季後賽有場均6.3顆的三分球出手,也是一個快艇非常 倚重的得分來源。他在對上馬刺的季後賽中,平均需要多跑0.6英里,而這很明顯的高出他 身體已經習慣的量。進攻的時候,如果由Leonard防守他,他又要花更多的體力要去擺脫 Leonard以獲得一個投籃空擋。這時他可能需要多做個假動作,或者以運球來獲得一些空 間。 On defense, Redick may get caught guarding Parker, who can try to attack him, Green, who as mentioned above, is constantly moving to free himself for a three, or even Leonard, who can easily take Redick off the dribble or post him. So with defense also being a tough task, there could be an effect on the lift on his jump shot by the end of the games, with him being an outside shooter. Through three games of the series, Redick is shooting just 36.8% from the outside. Outside of Barnes and Crawford, all of the other Clippers’ starters are also running more per game. 防守的時候,Redick可能會有對上要往他那邊進攻的Parker,而剛剛提到的Green就能趁 機跑動到三分球的空擋,甚至Leonard可以容易的以運球或者是以低位單打擺脫Redick。 所以,防守已經是個很艱難的任務了,這可能會影響到Redick之後在外圍的投籃。這三場 比賽下來,Redick的外圍投籃率只有36.8%。而除了Barnes跟Crawford,其他的快艇主力 都有著更多的跑動。 When you think about what a game is like energy-wise for a player like Paul, on offense he’s being defended by either Green or Leonard for a large portion of the time, while still having to be both his team’s floor general and a scorer, then on defense, he has to guard Parker and also a Monster Energy Drink in Patty Mills, who is flying all over the place on both ends of the floor when he’s in the game. 想想看一場比賽下來一個選手的體力會是怎麼樣被消磨。像是Paul,他在進攻的時候會長 時間的被Green或者是Leonard防守著,而他又要當進攻方面的組織以及得分手。然後防守 的時候他要對上Parker跟有著許多體力的Patty Mills。 If life were a video game, maybe we’d all have a little bar above our heads, which displays how much energy we have left, almost like a cell phone battery. However, in reality, we are all human beings and eventually our bodies do need rest to recharge and recover. As mentioned above, there’s no certain metric to evaluate fatigue’s role on NBA players, but what the minutes per game and miles ran per game are showing us, is that the data is in some ways supporting what our eyes see – with a lack of depth on their bench, the Clippers have looked fatigued at times through the first three games of this series. 如果人生就是是打電動一樣,或許我們頭上都可以有個像是體力值的東西,告訴我們還存 有多少體力,像是一個手機電池一樣。但是事實上,我們到頭來還是人類,我們的身體是 需要休息跟回復體力的。就像是我上面提到的,我們沒有一個計算疲勞會對選手有什麼影 響的方式。但是我提到的數據,在某種程度上都支持我們的眼睛所看到的-就是因為替補 深度的不完整而讓快艇在某些時刻看起來是疲勞的。 --- 我想就是因為Pop嚴格的控管選手的上場時間,才能保有那些已經有年紀的人的競爭力。 不過我覺得能控制季後賽上場時間跟常規賽差不多,這真的要多虧了這個體系造就了 我們這有深度的板凳群。 馬刺加油!下場先率先聽牌吧!! --
