Today at about 5:00pm, the Spanish sensation pulled out of the tournament due to a right groin injury. Rafa was battling the big serving Australian and was picking up his game before stoping play at 5-6 in the first set. Rafa needed two medical time outs before realizing that he could do serious damage to his thigh if he kept playing. Rafa apologized to the crowd and said that he had been “feeling a lot of pain here (pointing to his tigh) and that he hopes to be back next year”. At the press conference he explained that the pain started during his flight from Chennai to Sydney, and that he saw his physio this morning before the match to see if he could play. “He told me that it could get worse” he explained. Of Guccione he said, “had one of the best serves in the tour, it’s unbelievable” and that he “couldn’t see the ball” when Guccione was serving. Rafa will be leaving tomorrow to Melbourne and feels mentally prepared or the first Gran Slam of the year which starts next Monday 15th of January.
