Moya captured his first title on Spanish soil. Moya, the No. 2 seed who reached the final in Barcelona two years ago before losing to countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero in a 4-hour marathon, claimed his first ATP title on home soil and his second of the season having won in Buenos Aires on clay in February. The 26-year-old from Palma de Mallorca, who also reached the final of the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami before losing to Andre Agassi, now moves up to second position in the ATP Champions Race 2003. Watched by the "Excelentisimos Senores" Dukes of Palma among the packed crowd at the Real Club de Tenis, Moya recorded his second consecutive win over Safin and now leads their head-to-head series 3-2 overall.
