1. Authorship should be reserved for individuals who have met all of the
following conditions:
a. Made a significant contribution to the conception and design or the
analysis and interpretation of data.
b. Participated in drafting the article or reviewing and/or revising it for
intellectual content.
c. Approved the final version of the manuscript.
d. Exceptions may be appropriate for deceased authors (denoted in the
manuscript with a footnote reporting their death).
2. Examples of contributors and contributions that do not merit authorship:
a. Those who only assisted the research by their encouragement and advice
(for example, thesis committee members, lab members or others who
provide substantial suggestions during a committee meeting, lab meeting
or seminar).
b. Those who provided only space, financial support, reagents, occasional
analyses or patient materials.
c. Providing materials in and of itself does not constitute sufficient grounds
for authorship.
