Magic give Van Gundy, Smith extensions

After reaching the Finals last season for the first time since 1995, the
Orlando Magic have rewarded Coach Stan Van Gundy and General Manager Otis
Smith with contract extensions, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.

The team picked up the options of both Van Gundy and Smith for another year,
extending Van Gundy through the 2010-11 season and Smith through 2011-2012.

The Sentinel first reported in January that the Magic were open to giving Van
Gundy an extension this summer. His deal was set to expire after this season,
although the team held an option for the 2010-11 season.

The Magic obviously wanted to keep the Van Gundy-Smith duo intact for the
long haul. They already had given Smith --- who was named general manager in
May of 2006 -- a multiyear extension last June.

Van Gundy is 111-53 after taking over the Magic before the 2007-08 season,
replacing Billy Donovan in one of the most bizarre coaching soap operas.

He led the Magic to a 52-30 record in his first season and into the second
round of the playoffs for the first time since 1996. The club finished 59-23

Smith, a small forward on the Magic's original team in 1989, has been the
architect of the franchise's rebirth. The Magic's surprise run to the title
round capped a climb that began after the club finished with a league-worst
21-61 record in 2004.
Smith，原本是魔術隊1989年時的小前鋒，已經搖身一變成為重建球隊招牌的建築師。這
支球隊原本在2004年只有下21勝61敗的難堪成績咧，能有現在的成就真是令人驚奇。
