太極拳和其他種拳術最大的不同之一在於,
太極拳的練習多是「等長運動」(isometric exercise)
等長運動是甚麼呢?
簡單的說,是一種關節角度和肌肉長度在運動時不變的運動,
舉例來說蹲馬步就是一種等長運動,因為你的身體沒有動作的大幅度改變,
大幅度快速的改變肢體動作比如拳擊就不是等長運動。
這種運動能夠培養肌肉的耐力,並增加肌群的最大出力與柔軟度,
而且能夠訓練到動態運動容易用不到的肌群;
另一種運動則是動態運動(dynamic exercise),
能夠增加肌肉爆發力,但在增強肌耐力方面卻遠不如等長運動的訓練。

than dynamic exercises at increasing maximal strength at the joint angle.[8]
Flexibility may be increased when isometrics are performed at joint range of
motion extremes. These isometric contractions recruit muscle fibers that are often neglected
in some dynamic exercises. For example, gymnasts are extremely strong at
great ranges of motion through the practice of isometric holds."
