太极拳和其他种拳术最大的不同之一在於,
太极拳的练习多是「等长运动」(isometric exercise)
等长运动是甚麽呢?
简单的说,是一种关节角度和肌肉长度在运动时不变的运动,
举例来说蹲马步就是一种等长运动,因为你的身体没有动作的大幅度改变,
大幅度快速的改变肢体动作比如拳击就不是等长运动。
这种运动能够培养肌肉的耐力,并增加肌群的最大出力与柔软度,
而且能够训练到动态运动容易用不到的肌群;
另一种运动则是动态运动(dynamic exercise),
能够增加肌肉爆发力,但在增强肌耐力方面却远不如等长运动的训练。

than dynamic exercises at increasing maximal strength at the joint angle.[8]
Flexibility may be increased when isometrics are performed at joint range of
motion extremes. These isometric contractions recruit muscle fibers that are often neglected
in some dynamic exercises. For example, gymnasts are extremely strong at
great ranges of motion through the practice of isometric holds."
