March 6, 2006 -- It is one of those individual matchups that turns an
ordinary NBA game into a must-watch. Ron Artest, maybe the best defensive
player in the NBA, facing off with one of the league's top scorers, Vince
Carter.
This type of challenge not only gets fans psyched up, but Carter is looking
forward to it, as well.
"Of course," Carter said. "Just because it is a challenge to see where I hold
up as an offensive player. At the same time, I just want to win."
Artest has made a huge difference in Sacramento's win-loss column. With
Artest and his menacing defense, the Kings are 10-7. Before Artest,
Sacramento was 18-24.

At 6-7, 260 pounds, the St. John's product has all the assets to be a great
defender, which includes the attitude to want to hold his man down.
"He is able to get into virtually any offensive player without getting beat
off of the dribble," said Net coach Lawrence Frank, whose team stopped a
three-game losing streak with its OT win Saturday over the Raptors. "He has a
great combination of strength, speed, quickness and basketball IQ all in one.
He is special. He is very tough minded."
Earlier in the year when the Nets faced Artest in Indiana, Artest guarded
both Carter and Richard Jefferson. In the Pacers' 102-90 victory over the
Nets, Artest finished with 30, while Carter had 18 and Jefferson scored only
seven.

"He adjusts to how you are playing," Carter said of Artest. "You have to
always, at best, be a step ahead of him. You have to just play your game and
not try to prove a point or anything - just play the team game.
"There are a couple of guys who play as physical, but he is probably stronger
than all of them, so I guess you could say he is more physical because of his
weight," Carter said.
Before giving up 117 points in the Kings' loss to the Wizards yesterday,
Sacramento was allowing 90.1 points in its past six games.
"They are playing much better team defense since he has been there," Frank
said. Artest is averaging 17.1 as a King, but it is his defense that has made
Sacramento better.
"You just have to figure him out as he goes," Carter said. "He is a tough
defender. You have to just attack. You just can't play with it. That is when
his strength and size really becomes an advantage. You just have to be smart."

Jefferson - who last week was involved in a minor controversy over the amount
of shots he receives - asked reporters if they needed to talk to him
yesterday. When one scribe retorted, "Are you going to say anything?"
Jefferson responded, "Not anymore."
