Pudge placed on DL with back strain Nieves will take over as primary catcher for Nationals By Bill Ladson / MLB.com 05/24/10 11:50 AM ET WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have placed catcher Ivan Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 23, because of a lower back strain. The team will make a corresponding move Tuesday. It was clear late Sunday that general manager Mike Rizzo had to make a move, because Rodriguez told some of his teammates that he wasn't going on the 10-day road trip, which starts Tuesday against the Giants. Rodriguez, 38, was hitting .325 (40-for-123) with one home run and 16 RBIs in 35 games for the Nationals this season. Defensively, Rodriguez has had a hand in cultivating a pitching staff that has reduced its ERA by 0.45 runs compared with last season. With Rodriguez on the DL, Wil Nieves will get most of the playing time behind the plate. Manager Jim Riggleman announced Sunday that first baseman/outfielder Mike Morse would be the backup, but that now appears unlikely. The team could call up Jamie Burke, who left extended spring training and was expected to join Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.
