He won the 2008 French Open and Wimbledon titles, then snared the Olympic gold medal in Beijing before complaining of scheduling exhaustion following a four-set semifinal loss to Andy Murray at the US Open. Four months later, Nadal wore down Roger Federer in a classic five-set final to earn his first, and to date only, Australian Open crown. On three occasions, Federer has won three majors in the same season, reigning in Melbourne, London and New York in 2004, 2006 and 2007 - but Nadal stopped him in Paris in the 06' and '07 finals after Gustavo Kuerten had in the third round in '04. Federer also would have accomplished a non-calendar-year slam at this year's Australian Open had he not come up two points short in last year's US Open final against Juan Martin del Potro. Pete Sampras also once held the Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open titles at the same time but, with a slam beckoning, he slipped up against American countryman Jim Courier in the 1994 French Open quarter-finals. Having already accrued five French Open trophies and two at Wimbledon, few would bet against Nadal also joining Laver and fellow Australian Roy Emerson as the only men to have won every major at least twice.
