It critically analyzes basic concepts underlying most theories of justice, including impartiality, formal equality, and the unitary moral subjectivity. Starting from claims of excluded groups about decision making, cultural expression, and division of labor, Iris Young defines concepts of domination and oppression to cover issues eluding the distributive model. Democratic theorists, according to Young do not adequately address the problem of an inclusive participatory framework. By assuming a homogeneous public, they fail to consider institutional arrangements for including people not culturally identified with white European male norms of reason and respectability. Young urges that normative theory and public policy should undermine group-based oppression by affirming rather than suppressing social group difference. Basing her vision of the good society on the differentiated, culturally plural network of contemporary urban life, she argues for a principle of group representation in democratic publics and for group-differentiated policies. --------------------------------------------------------- 以下簡短介紹本書的內容，如有翻譯不當請多多指正 Contents: Chapter 1 Displacing the Distributive Paradigm Chapter 2 Five Faces of Oppression Chapter 3 Insurgency and the Welfare Capitalist Society Chapter 4 The Ideal of Impartiality and the Civic Public Chepter 5 The Scaling of Bodies and the Politics of Identity Chapter 6 Social Movements and the Politics of Difference Chapter 7 Affirmative Action and the Myth of Merit Chapter 8 city Life and Difference Epilogue International Justice 首先，Young在第一章中挑戰了所謂的分配典範(distributive paradigm)， 他認為社會正義不僅僅是物質上的公平分配，而將分配正義延伸到權力、機 會、職位的方式仍然不恰當。他認為除了財物的分配之外，正義還包含了決 策的形成(decision-making process)、勞力分工(division of labor,即社 會上的哪些人應該為誰做哪些事情)以及文化。而不正義主要則展現在壓迫( oppression, the institutional constraint on self-development)以及 宰制(domination, the institutional constraint onself-determination) 上面。 於是Young在第二章中試著去定義何謂壓迫，他歸納出壓迫的五個面向：剝削 (exploitation)、邊緣化(marginalizatoin)、無力感(powerlessness)、文 化帝國主義(culture emperialism)及暴力(violence)。這些東西都可能導致 分配上的不正義，但都涉及社會結構和社會關係，無法化約成分配的議題。 接下來Young就以決策的形成、勞力分工及文化為經，壓迫的五個面向為緯， 開始分析社會中存在各式各樣的不正義。第三章對納入福利制度的資本主義 社會(welfare capitalist society)的去政治化(depolitization)提出批判 ；第四章則挑戰現代社會中經常被看重的公正(impartiality)、價值中立、 專業等觀念，分析其帶來的負面影響；第五章談論理性/身體/感覺，並強調 僅管現代自由主義社會強調容忍差異，公平對待每一個人，卻忽略了對某些 族群下意識的厭誤(unconscious aversion)所導致的壓迫，如種族主義、性 別主義、恐同等。 這幾章中也談到了一個重要的主題：異質性(heterogeneity)。Young認為西 方社會中所謂的「理性」中含有一種有對差異的否定，所謂的公正是單一的 、普世皆準的，推理/感覺、客觀/主觀、主流/少數都變成相互對立的。而 所謂的「他者」(Otherness)便成了走偏的(deviance)、道德上不可欲的 (devaluation)群體。而第六章談到了女性、黑人、同志、身障者對於自己 群體負面形象的改造，並強調(affirm)自己群體的正面之處。Young以語言 政策(官方語言)、原住民政策等為例，認為有時必需用不同的判準來對待 某些群體，才能達到真正的正義。 在第七章，Young認為「積極平權措施」(affirmative action)不應限於對 過去遭到歧視的群體的補償，或是分配典範下對高階職位的均等分配，他 在此章中對「職位高低應視能力、貢獻來分配」以及「由上到下階層性的 勞力分工」(hierarchical division of labor)提出了批判。 在末章中，Young提到雖然他對於自由主義、資本主義雖多有批判，但這並 不代表他完全認同社群主義，因為這同樣是壓抑差異的一種表現。他試著 想象一種多元、正視而非排除差異的城市生活。此外，他也談到了許多城 市(鄉鎮等區域)面臨的壓迫：(容我偷懶一下)centralized corporate and bureaucratic domination of cities; decisionmaking structures in municipalities and their hidden mechanisms of redistrubution; process of segregation and exclusion, both within cities and between cities and suburbs. 並試著提出自治(autonomy)以外的解決之道。 ----------------------------------------------------------- Young的分析針對的是1990以前的美國社會，但對照我國現狀會發現太多太 多的相似之處，近期我們關心的樂生、溪洲、環境……都有許多和書中相 互呼應的地方。 作為關心社會運動、校園民主的社團，Young對資本主義社會的分析我覺得 是相當值得參考，此書也提到了社運在批判的許多現象，因此很希望能開 個此書的讀書會。 雖然Young試著把這本書寫得能讓社會大眾都能看得懂，但在談到哲學理論 的時候還是得有一定的背景才能了解，加上語言的隔閡…對我們而言應該 是滿大的挑戰 在各章中，他習慣先陳述一個哲學基礎，並對此批判，再談到這個基礎下 造成的社會現象及其負面影響，再試著找出不同的思考點或改革方向，大 概了解這種寫作方式後，在閱讀開始的哲學部分或許會比較容易理解。 至於讀書會的形式、參與者、進行方式……我目前都還不確定，希望大家 能提供一些意見……目前是希望先找到一些有興趣的人，大家再找時間開 個小會討論之類的~ 實際讀的時候可能會一次一個章節，每個章節的架構、談到的東西、相應 的議題…在之前(剛拿到文本的時候)都要先出來，這個我會試著做，現在 主要就是先找到人，有興趣的務請跟我聯絡啊~~~ --
