It critically analyzes basic concepts underlying most theories of justice, including impartiality, formal equality, and the unitary moral subjectivity. Starting from claims of excluded groups about decision making, cultural expression, and division of labor, Iris Young defines concepts of domination and oppression to cover issues eluding the distributive model. Democratic theorists, according to Young do not adequately address the problem of an inclusive participatory framework. By assuming a homogeneous public, they fail to consider institutional arrangements for including people not culturally identified with white European male norms of reason and respectability. Young urges that normative theory and public policy should undermine group-based oppression by affirming rather than suppressing social group difference. Basing her vision of the good society on the differentiated, culturally plural network of contemporary urban life, she argues for a principle of group representation in democratic publics and for group-differentiated policies. --------------------------------------------------------- 以下简短介绍本书的内容，如有翻译不当请多多指正 Contents: Chapter 1 Displacing the Distributive Paradigm Chapter 2 Five Faces of Oppression Chapter 3 Insurgency and the Welfare Capitalist Society Chapter 4 The Ideal of Impartiality and the Civic Public Chepter 5 The Scaling of Bodies and the Politics of Identity Chapter 6 Social Movements and the Politics of Difference Chapter 7 Affirmative Action and the Myth of Merit Chapter 8 city Life and Difference Epilogue International Justice 首先，Young在第一章中挑战了所谓的分配典范(distributive paradigm)， 他认为社会正义不仅仅是物质上的公平分配，而将分配正义延伸到权力、机 会、职位的方式仍然不恰当。他认为除了财物的分配之外，正义还包含了决 策的形成(decision-making process)、劳力分工(division of labor,即社 会上的哪些人应该为谁做哪些事情)以及文化。而不正义主要则展现在压迫( oppression, the institutional constraint on self-development)以及 宰制(domination, the institutional constraint onself-determination) 上面。 於是Young在第二章中试着去定义何谓压迫，他归纳出压迫的五个面向：剥削 (exploitation)、边缘化(marginalizatoin)、无力感(powerlessness)、文 化帝国主义(culture emperialism)及暴力(violence)。这些东西都可能导致 分配上的不正义，但都涉及社会结构和社会关系，无法化约成分配的议题。 接下来Young就以决策的形成、劳力分工及文化为经，压迫的五个面向为纬， 开始分析社会中存在各式各样的不正义。第三章对纳入福利制度的资本主义 社会(welfare capitalist society)的去政治化(depolitization)提出批判 ；第四章则挑战现代社会中经常被看重的公正(impartiality)、价值中立、 专业等观念，分析其带来的负面影响；第五章谈论理性/身体/感觉，并强调 仅管现代自由主义社会强调容忍差异，公平对待每一个人，却忽略了对某些 族群下意识的厌误(unconscious aversion)所导致的压迫，如种族主义、性 别主义、恐同等。 这几章中也谈到了一个重要的主题：异质性(heterogeneity)。Young认为西 方社会中所谓的「理性」中含有一种有对差异的否定，所谓的公正是单一的 、普世皆准的，推理/感觉、客观/主观、主流/少数都变成相互对立的。而 所谓的「他者」(Otherness)便成了走偏的(deviance)、道德上不可欲的 (devaluation)群体。而第六章谈到了女性、黑人、同志、身障者对於自己 群体负面形象的改造，并强调(affirm)自己群体的正面之处。Young以语言 政策(官方语言)、原住民政策等为例，认为有时必需用不同的判准来对待 某些群体，才能达到真正的正义。 在第七章，Young认为「积极平权措施」(affirmative action)不应限於对 过去遭到歧视的群体的补偿，或是分配典范下对高阶职位的均等分配，他 在此章中对「职位高低应视能力、贡献来分配」以及「由上到下阶层性的 劳力分工」(hierarchical division of labor)提出了批判。 在末章中，Young提到虽然他对於自由主义、资本主义虽多有批判，但这并 不代表他完全认同社群主义，因为这同样是压抑差异的一种表现。他试着 想象一种多元、正视而非排除差异的城市生活。此外，他也谈到了许多城 市(乡镇等区域)面临的压迫：(容我偷懒一下)centralized corporate and bureaucratic domination of cities; decisionmaking structures in municipalities and their hidden mechanisms of redistrubution; process of segregation and exclusion, both within cities and between cities and suburbs. 并试着提出自治(autonomy)以外的解决之道。 ----------------------------------------------------------- Young的分析针对的是1990以前的美国社会，但对照我国现状会发现太多太 多的相似之处，近期我们关心的乐生、溪洲、环境……都有许多和书中相 互呼应的地方。 作为关心社会运动、校园民主的社团，Young对资本主义社会的分析我觉得 是相当值得参考，此书也提到了社运在批判的许多现象，因此很希望能开 个此书的读书会。 虽然Young试着把这本书写得能让社会大众都能看得懂，但在谈到哲学理论 的时候还是得有一定的背景才能了解，加上语言的隔阂…对我们而言应该 是满大的挑战 在各章中，他习惯先陈述一个哲学基础，并对此批判，再谈到这个基础下 造成的社会现象及其负面影响，再试着找出不同的思考点或改革方向，大 概了解这种写作方式後，在阅读开始的哲学部分或许会比较容易理解。 至於读书会的形式、参与者、进行方式……我目前都还不确定，希望大家 能提供一些意见……目前是希望先找到一些有兴趣的人，大家再找时间开 个小会讨论之类的~ 实际读的时候可能会一次一个章节，每个章节的架构、谈到的东西、相应 的议题…在之前(刚拿到文本的时候)都要先出来，这个我会试着做，现在 主要就是先找到人，有兴趣的务请跟我联络啊~~~ --
