Abstract:
Like all great literature, The Sound and the Fury invites and rewards a variety
of reading approaches. At its most literal level the novel presents the tragic
disintegration of the once proud and prestigious Compson family. But the novel
also incorporates broader levels of meaning that may be suggested by the
various contexts of the novel. I will examine five of the most significant of
these contexts, which may be represented by a series of concentric circles
beginning with the author’s personal experiences and extending outward to
regional, national, international, and universal (or mythic) applications.
摘要：
《聲音與憤怒》（The Sound and the Fury, 1929）是舉世聞名的福克納傑作之一，也是二
十世紀現代主義小說的重要代表作；事實上，在福氏作品中，世人最常將福克納和《聲音與
憤怒》聯想在一起。福克納本人對這部作品亦情有獨鍾，一方面稱之為「最輝煌的失敗」（
the most splendid failure），1940年代中期還特地為這部小說寫了很長的附錄（
Appendix: Compson: 1699-1945）增添了康普森家族（the Compsons）和吉柏生家族（the
Gibsons）的系譜；附錄最初收在1946年由Malcolm Cowley編纂的The Portable Faulkner乙
書中，福克納之聲望從此扶搖直上，終於在1950年榮膺諾貝爾文學獎。
演講者Robert W. Hamblin教授係福克納專家，目前擔任東南密蘇里州立大學教授兼福克納
研究中心主任。在五月十四日下午的演講中，Hamblin教授將從個人、地域、國家、國際和
神話（宇宙）等五個不同的層次、解讀福氏的文本及其脈絡。
