Abstract:
Like all great literature, The Sound and the Fury invites and rewards a variety
of reading approaches. At its most literal level the novel presents the tragic
disintegration of the once proud and prestigious Compson family. But the novel
also incorporates broader levels of meaning that may be suggested by the
various contexts of the novel. I will examine five of the most significant of
these contexts, which may be represented by a series of concentric circles
beginning with the author’s personal experiences and extending outward to
regional, national, international, and universal (or mythic) applications.
摘要：
《声音与愤怒》（The Sound and the Fury, 1929）是举世闻名的福克纳杰作之一，也是二
十世纪现代主义小说的重要代表作；事实上，在福氏作品中，世人最常将福克纳和《声音与
愤怒》联想在一起。福克纳本人对这部作品亦情有独锺，一方面称之为「最辉煌的失败」（
the most splendid failure），1940年代中期还特地为这部小说写了很长的附录（
Appendix: Compson: 1699-1945）增添了康普森家族（the Compsons）和吉柏生家族（the
Gibsons）的系谱；附录最初收在1946年由Malcolm Cowley编纂的The Portable Faulkner乙
书中，福克纳之声望从此扶摇直上，终於在1950年荣膺诺贝尔文学奖。
演讲者Robert W. Hamblin教授系福克纳专家，目前担任东南密苏里州立大学教授兼福克纳
研究中心主任。在五月十四日下午的演讲中，Hamblin教授将从个人、地域、国家、国际和
神话（宇宙）等五个不同的层次、解读福氏的文本及其脉络。
