ふと suddenly, unexpectedly, involuntarily, casually.
Explanation: ふと always refers to a situation involving motion or action,
but the actiosn it refers to are always involuntary rather than planned.
It can refer to a mental action in which some thought or recollection
unexpectedly occurs. it can also refer to physical actiosn which took place
in the same unplanned or involuntary manner.
Sectoin A
テレビを見ているうちに, ふと昔のことを思い出した.
While watching TV, i suddenly remembered something from the past.
あれこれ考え惱んでいたが, ふといいアイダィアが頭に浮んだ.
My mind was wandering, when suddenly i got a good idea.
推理小說を夢中で讀んでいてふと氣がつくと, もう夜中の三時を過ぎていた.
i was absorbed in the detective novel when i suddenly realised that i was
past three in the morning.
Section B
ふと耳を澄ますと, 草むらで鳴く虫の聲が聞こえる.
I suddenly pricked up my ears and coming from the bushes could hear
the sound of an insect.
本から目を離してふと見ると, 外には雪が降っていた.
Mu eyes wandered rom the book, when i happened to look up and saw that
i saw smowing outside.
Section C
私達はふとしたことで友達になりました.
Almost without knowing it we became friends.
ふとしたことがきっかけでこの任事を始めました.
I began this job almost accidentally.
