「 小 型 和 中 型 個 體 」 英 文 應 寫 作 small- and medium-sized entity 還 是 small and medium-sized entity ？ 首 先 有 兩 點 要 說 ： entity 是 可 數 名 詞 （ countable noun ） ， 「 小 型 和 中 型 個 體 」 是 復 數 ， entity 應 改 為 entities ； small-sized entity 等 也 可 寫 作 small-size entity 。 至 於 連 字 號 （ hyphen ） ， 讀 者 示 下 的 兩 個 寫 法 哪 個 正 確 ？ 請 先 看 Martin Manser 編 寫 的 Good English 一 書 所 言 ： A common element need not be repeated in groups of two or more hyphenated compounds but the hyphen must not be omitted: the same convention applies to solid compounds, in which the common element may be replaced by a hyphen （ 帶 連 字 號 的 復 合 詞 ， 假 如 並 用 ， 而 各 復 合 詞 之 內 又 假 如 有 一 字 相 同 ， 則 該 字 可 以 略 去 ， 但 連 字 號 必 須 保 留 。 連 成 一 體 的 復 合 詞 也 是 如 此 ， 其 中 相 同 的 字 可 用 連 字 號 取 代 ） 。 該 書 舉 了 long- or short-haired dogs （ 長 毛 狗 或 短 毛 狗 ） 、 salesmen and -women （ 男 女 售 貨 員 ） 為 例 。 不 過 ， Frederick T. Wood 所 撰 Current English Usage 卻 有 不 同 意 見 ： Avoid the unsightly and unnatural hyphens in schoolboys and -girls, Englishmen and -women, grandfathers and -mothers. Write schoolboys and schoolgirls, etc （ Schoolboys and -girls 、 Englishmen and -women 、 grandfathers and -mothers 等 寫 法 之 中 的 連 字 號 ， 既 難 看 又 不 自 然 ， 不 宜 使 用 ， 宜 改 為 schoolboys and schoolgirls 等 ） 。 很 明 顯 ， small- （ and medium-sized entities ） 這 樣 的 虛 懸 連 字 號 （ suspensive hyphen ） 用 法 ， 英 語 學 者 意 見 不 一 。 Small- and medium-sized entities 和 small and medium-sized entities 兩 個 寫 法 都 可 以 說 是 正 確 的 。 -- 恐懼是一回事 繼續恐懼又是另一回事 --
