Set 7000 : feet above sea level, the climate is perfect for growing tea, : Kenya's biggest export, which fetched $1.4bn last year. : For Paul Chepkwony, the governor of Kericho County, these : plantations are a reminder of the way the British stiffed : his Kipsigis tribe of their land. : 請問第二行中的escarpment要怎麼理解比較好呢？ : (字典查到的意思有「擒縱機構（打字機上控制行距的）棘輪裝置；脫逃；逃路」) : 謝謝! 先看上下兩句，來決定這個要表達什麼。 "Emerald-green estates stretch as far as the eye can see" "Set 7000 feet above sea level, the climate is perfect for growing tea." 好，那第一句指出來這個茶園面積很大，所以"hugging the western escarpment of the Rift Valley." 應該是指它的面積大到可以到這個河谷的邊緣。 （hug雖然也可以翻成擁抱，但這裡是做to stay close to解，就是很靠近的意思。） 下一句就是形容它茶園高度，指這個高度的氣候適合種植。 那這樣western escarpment 就是暗指這個茶園的面積邊緣意思。 那我們查一下M-W的字典說了什麼， escarpment: a long cliff or steep slope that separates two flat or slightly sloped areas https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/escarpment 也就是陡坡或懸崖的意思 所以這句的理解就是 這茶園之大，可以延伸到裂谷的西岸。 而且這篇應該是來自 The Economist, "A row over who owns Kenya’s land is making life hard for foreign firms," 21 Nov. 2019 也歡迎其他版友提供見解 --
