Should you put a comma before because? She was late, because there was lots
of traffic. (I was taught that this was incorrect, but have seen several
textbooks use it this way recently.)
---------------------------------------------------------------
It depends on whether the subordinate statement is important.
eg
Q - Why was she late?
A - She was late because there was lots of traffic.
eg
Q - Was she early or late?
A - She was late, because there was lots of traffic.
It might help you to consider that a comma represents a pause in speaking.
Try saying your senetnce aloud, and see if you pause. (I know this is not
easy if English is not your native language. )
