今天在上Wildlife Ecology and Management的時候 討論到"將野生動物標價以利於管理"的問題 大家都發表了不同的看法 但是絕大部分的同學 似乎都傾向於贊同這種做法 其實嚴格說起來小弟我本身應該也算是個ecologismist(*) 在半年前碰到類似的保育問題時 像人類活動與環境的衝突 我總是抱持著激進的看法 an extremely deep greeness of philosophy 而不考慮最根本的解決方法 甚至常常不認同人類福祉的priority 對於像GreenPeace直接把非法漁船炸沉的這種激進做法 在我心底深處其實還是有著相當大的快感以及認同的成分在 =P 但是直到我看得多聽得多知道得多了 我才開始了解協調的重要性 或許很多純粹的environmentalist會認為大自然 動物 植物 根本不該被賦予貨物般的價值 就像西雅圖酋長曾質疑的: " How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land, the swift of the antelope? If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them from us? Can you buy back the buffalo, once the last one has died? " 對啊 我們怎麼可以把大自然最雄壯 最美麗 最不可思議的創造 "物化"了以後 當成貨物在交易? 空氣不屬於我們 土地不屬於我們 河川不屬於我們 既然不屬於我們 怎麼可以買賣他們? 當最後一隻野牛死在人類的槍口之下 我們還能用錢把他們買回來嗎? 站在美學和哲學的角度 我再同意這種看法不過了 我想 為了大自然的壯麗而感動 流淚過的人 都能夠體會吧 但是當我們客觀地面對現實的問題時 人類的需求似乎很容易地就overwhlem了這份感動 當你吃不飽穿不暖 還得每天喝著骯髒的泥水 你的孩子一個接一個 或渴死 或餓死 因為寄生蟲感染病而死亡 你還會在乎非洲象 蘇門達臘虎 李爾氏金剛鸚鵡是否瀕臨絕種了嗎? 我想這是很現實的問題吧 關乎我們"個人"和"族群"到底能不能夠生存 所以保育生物學有個很重要的觀念就是 "當地人民的需求一定要第一個獲得滿足" 而人類社會要怎麼獲得滿足呢 顯而易見得 就是"錢"一個字吧 科學 science 應該是目前人類解決問題唯一能夠依靠的途徑 而科學要能夠達成他的效用 第一個就是要有能夠"量化"的數據 因此我認為森林 海洋 野生動物價值的量化(標價) 似乎是必要的 前面的文章有提過 在歐洲已經有國家開始為他們的森林標價了 森林不再是伐木商予取予求的對象 我希望以後野生動物也能夠這樣 藉由量化 才能夠確實地接近永續利用的理想 講"利用"聽起來很殘酷 但是要滿足人類的需求就要利用 所以我們要面對的是"要怎樣有效且永續地利用資源"的問題 而不應該是純粹且武斷的protection and preservation 我覺得這是個很棒的問題 不知道大家有什麼樣其他的看法? -- * ecologismist 生態主義者 大體上是指非常純粹的生態擁護者 而對人類在這樣極端的做法之下 會有怎樣的後果 完全不列入考慮 常常拿來跟以客觀科學的角度看事情的ecologist做區分 以下有英文定義 有興趣的看看 =) Ecologism From the eighties onward, it became common to refer to different “shades” of environmentalism: someone who was obviously green in their opinions might be further categorised as dark green or deep green, implying they had a radical or fundamentalist approach to the need to preserve the environment. Many greens distinguish between ecologism and environmentalism. The former is a fundamentalist philosophy of deep greenness— some would argue a political ideology, though not aligned anywhere along the traditional right versus left, capitalism versus socialism axis—with a strong spiritual component that seeks to preserve the environment in absolute terms without concern for the place of human beings within it and in particular without making allowance for the potential needs of future generations.
