本週所要討論的 Hoy et al. 2nd ed. (2001) 的 chap.2~3, 屬於 introduction and fundamentals, 本來我認為這個部分可能無法引起板 友們的興趣, 不過看到 ninmit 兄的心得及板友的推文, 似乎大家對這個 部分已經產生了不少共鳴, 感動莫名. 由於 Hoy et al. 主要討論 point sets 在 Ｒ^N 空間中的性質, 我 在閱讀時主要配合 Rudin 的 Principles of Mathematical Analysis, 3rd ed. (1976) 閱讀. 由於實數系中集合的概念比較單純, Hoy et al. 又花了比較多的文字闡述抽象的數學性質, 在閱讀 Rudin 時, Hoy et al. 的確起了幫助理解的作用; 而 Hoy et al. 透過文字說明的部分, Rudin 所提供的較嚴格的數學定義, 也更能幫助我掌握其內涵. Hot et al. 在 p.30 的 Thm. 2,5 陳述了 Ｒ 的 completeness property: Every nonempty subset of Ｒ that has an upper (lower) bound has a supremum (infimum) in Ｒ. 我在閱讀 Hoy et al. 時, 很難掌握其意義. 為什麼 least upper bound property 可以保證 Ｒ 的 complete? 關於這點, Rudin 在 p.8 的 Thm. 1.19 是這樣說的: There exists an ordered field Ｒ which has the least-upper-bound property. Moreover, Ｒ contains Ｑ as a subfield. 並且在 p.17~21 提供了證明, 可供參考. Rudin 在 p.32 的 def. 2.18 為 closed 和 open sets 提供了較嚴 謹的定義: (d) Ｅ is closed if every limit point of Ｅ is a point of Ｅ. (f) Ｅ is open if every point of Ｅ is an interior point of Ｅ. 在這個部分, Hoy et al. 在 p.35 針對 boundary point 和 interior point 提供了較詳細的文字說明: It is clearly true of a boundary point such as b that every interval around it, however small, must contain points that are in [a, b], and points that are not. In the case of an interior point, on the other hand, it will always be possible to find an interval around it that is entirely in [a, b]. 可說為 Rudin 提供了一個具體的範例. Hoy et al. 在 p.35 對 compact 的定義是比較簡單的: An interval that is both closed and bounded is called compact. 關於這個部分, Rudin 的定義就比較嚴格, 在 Rudin p.36 的 def. 2.31: A subset Ｋ of a metric space Ｘ is said to be compact if every open cover of Ｋ contains a finite subcover. 當然 Rudin 在 p.40 所介紹的 Heine-Borel theorem 也說明了在 Ｒ^N 空間中 closed and bounded 和 compact 是相同的, 不過我想我們在閱 讀時, 如果稍微瞭解 compact 的定義, 對未來理解更艱深的內容可能也 會有些幫助. Hoy et al. 在 2.4 定義了函數的 convex, concave, quasiconvex 和 quasiconcave, 我在讀 Varian 時沒有搞清楚, 現在終於稍微瞭解它 背後的意思, 真是欣喜若狂. -- http://tonyy271828.spaces.live.com/ --
