http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/bulls.asp?id=37634 from Daily Herald, Paddock Publications, Paxson’s goal to have everyone return next season By Mike McGraw Daily Herald Sports Writer Posted Tuesday, April 19, 2005 More than a week has passed since the Bulls clinched their first playoff berth in seven years. Finally on Monday at the Berto Center, the architect of this surprising turnaround, general manager John Paxson, stood up and toasted the players that made this all possible. “My intention this off-season is to bring everyone back,” Paxson said. That’s my goal. We’ll sit down with (chairman) Jerry (Reinsdorf) and other people after the season and we’ll go over kind of financially what that will mean. “But I think all of us agree that we need to continue this thing going. The continuity is going to be very important. I think our fans would like to see the majority of this team back as well.” Paxson’s goal isn’t much of a surprise, but this was the first time he expressed his feelings in such a direct manner. Keeping the current group intact would mean re-signing restricted free agents Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry, Chris Duhon, Jannero Pargo and Jared Reiner, plus unrestricted free agents Othella Harrington and Adrian Griffin. Guard Frank Williams, who played in only nine games this season, is another free agent, but he could probably find a better opportunity elsewhere. The Bulls have no draft picks this year and won’t have salary-cap room until 2006. The likely goal this summer will be to seek a taller, defensive-minded shooting guard. Utah’s Raja Bell is one free agent who could interest the Bulls. The Bulls have the right to match any contract offer the restricted free agents receive from other teams. Paxson has maintained since last summer that cost will not keep them from re-signing both Curry and Chandler. Pargo didn’t play much early in the season, but he’s popular among his teammates. Much like Trenton Hassell a few years ago, Pargo is quiet in public but turns into the locker-room comedian when the door is closed. A year ago, Harrington was left off New York’s playoff roster. But he may get some interest as a free agent this summer since he’s been so valuable for the Bulls. “Every morning when there’s practice, I look out of my office and Othella’ s the first guy on the floor shooting shots,” Paxson said. “When you’re in my position, those guys are invaluable.” "I love the guys around here,” Harrington said. “I love the atmosphere, the coaches. If everything plays out the way it should, then hopefully I’ll be here.” Paxson also credited Reinsdorf for allowing the team to release players with guaranteed contracts. The Bulls are still paying Eddie Robinson, Mike Wilks, Scottie Pippen and Chris Jefferies. “He let me make decisions where we had to eat some money, but it helped our team win,” Paxson said. “A lot of times owners just won’t let you do that.” “Let’s face it, it’s been a terrific year in terms of what we’ve been able to accomplish. The playoffs will be exciting, it’s just too bad we won’t have Eddy and Luol (Deng) to experience that with us. It makes you think we 're a pretty good basketball team if we had those two on the roster.”
