Chelsea's two African representatives in the World Cup were given extra time-off due to their activity in Germany, but not too much extra. Drogba's Ivory Coast went out in the group stage, having suffered the misfortune to be drawn in the toughest group of the tournament. Although Essien's Ghana did make it to the knockout stage, he didn't, having earned a suspension for the game against Brazil. Essien was on duty yesterday at the adidas kit launch and now the two players have joined up with Chelsea's non-World Cup players who started back on Monday. And with training continuing to take place in near African temperatures, rehydration is taken very seriously. The water station that Drogba and Essien are standing next to as they talk to their manager is a permanent fixture adjacent to the Cobham pitches at the moment. They returned to an army of tailors and an extreme method of cooling the body. Robben's stay in Germany at the World Cup ended at the first knockout stage but while England went a round further, Bridge did not take part in the matches. So he was back at Cobham two days ahead of John Terry, Joe Cole and Frank Lampard. With just a handful of players yet to return, and the reserve and youth team squads helping to make up the numbers, a large-sided practice game was now possible on another steamy summer morning. If Bridge was feeling the heat after his first session back, he didn't hesitate to do something about. Available for the hardy before they re-enter the dressing rooms are a line of ice baths — waste-high containers full of iced water to aid post-training recovery. Chelsea's England left-back was the first of the first team in. Between morning and afternoon training there was another duty for the players. A new season means a new club suit and Monday was the fitting session.
