Earlier this week, the subject of the Boston Celtics came up -- and LeBron James rattled off all the Celtics' upcoming games until the two teams square off on Jan. 9. That's right, he had memorized Boston's schedule for the next three weeks. He knew the Cavs' schedule, too. One of the benefits of the Celtics' fast start is that it has the Cavs pushing hard, too. After starting the season 1-2, the Cavs have won 22 of 24. Wish I could say Boston is riding its regulars hard to win big, but Ray Allen (36.0 minutes), Paul Pierce (36.6), Kevin Garnett (33.0) and Rajon Rondo (31.6) are all playing reasonable minutes. For the Cavs, only James (36.2), Delonte West (33.4) and Mo Williams (32.6) are averaging more than 30 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, Detroit is a mess. Heading into the weekend, the Pistons were 11-11 since the Allen Iverson deal. They had a streak of 10 consecutive games where a player had a technical foul. They may pull together under rookie coach Michael Curry, but it's obvious that Chauncey Billups was the glue. Just look what he has done for Denver since being traded for Iverson. 4. James recently admitted he had been "intimidated" as a rookie when defended by muscle-man Ron Artest. No more. Five years later, James has added about 30 pounds of muscle. He had 27 points and nine rebounds against Houston and Artest on Tuesday. Bullying James doesn't work, as Washington discovered in the playoffs last year. He has practiced little as the Cavs wisely rest the ankle. They are keeping his minutes under 30. No reason for alarm, just be aware that it may take a while for the 7-3 center to return to normal. And give him credit for coming back quickly from the injury. 6. But Anderson Varejao is playing more minutes and also playing the best basketball of his career. In December, he's averaging 10.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, shooting 53 percent from the field and 68 percent at the foul line in 28 minutes a game. I rolled my eyes during training camp when I heard about Varejao improving his outside shooting -- but give him credit, he's really practiced and it's paid off. And how about this? Varejao leads the team in rebounding (6.9), just ahead of Ben Wallace (6.8) and James (6.8). 7. Keep an eye on West, who is battling some back troubles. In the past two games, he is 9-of-26 from the field with only three rebounds in 61 minutes. He has had some minor back troubles in the past. West is averaging 12.3 points, shooting 46 percent and doing a very good job defending opposing shooting guards -- who often are taller. While James is the team leader who speaks the most in huddles, Williams is not far behind in terms of the respect he receives from his teammates. 9. Most of the time, Williams sounds like coach Mike Brown. He talks defense. He talks about his teammates making open shots. He talks about the players trusting each other. And he demonstrates that on the court. He has transformed from a totally indifferent defender to a guy whose defense is now average and improving.
