"I like to take on projects that are in pockets of life that I don't have any particular knowledge of," says Blanchett, who relishes "the research and the teasing apart of a character."" Per Woods, her role in "Little Fish" is the closest she's come to playing someone her own age and of her own culture. "This is probably the scariest challenge for Cate yet." Recent accomplishments: Won her first Oscar this year, for supporting actress in "The Aviator." Blanchett says the experience gave her some unexpected perspective. "You get to the top of a mountain that ends up being a plateau. You can look forward but also backwards. It's the first time I've really taken stock. "In the end," she adds, "the thing I'm most proud of is my marriage." (Husband is playwright Andrew Upton.) Along the way: A National Institute of Dramatic Art grad, Blanchett started her career on the stage in Sydney and London, then moved into film. Playing the Virgin Queen in "Elizabeth""Elizabeth" brought her first Oscar nom; she's also taken roles in such varied films as "The Talented Mr. Ripley," "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Missing.""It feels like film is a long deviation from theater," Blanchett says, adding that she and her husband, with their two children, are "wending our way back to Sydney. We want to work more in the theater, the culture that we are from and continually drawing from."
