Lecturing is often the most commonly adopted teaching method in a large class environment. The biggest problem with this method is that it reduces opportunities for interaction between the teacher and the students. It is also incredibly hard for the teacher to find time to provide one-on-one tuition. The “flipped classroom” teaching method is a recent development that utilizes technology to resolve these problems. The “flipped” part of the approach indicates how the classroom-based “knowledge teaching” and the homework-based “assignments” are reversed. The actual method of implementation involves recording the in-class lecturing and producing a video for students to watch outside of class. The limited classroom time that is available is then used for interactive teaching to increase educational efficiency such as putting the teaching material into practice, solving problems, or conducting discussions. The educational reasoning behind this approach is that it allows the teacher and students to engage in face-to-face communication in the classroom to carry out learning activities. Nevertheless, the points raised above only explain the methodology and reasoning for “flipping” the classroom. The most important principle of this methodology is that the teaching theory and educational design have also changed. The core principle focuses on returning the emphasis on learning back to the students themselves. The teacher’s original leadership role is modified to become one of providing study guidance and assistance. So how is this approach actually carried out?
