标题[闲聊] 为什麽想当翻译？

今早一边吃早餐一边翻《翻译科学探索》(Toward a Science of Translating) 的时候，
刚好翻到第七章，讨论到译者扮演的到底是怎样一个角色；
我们的奈达兄(Eugene A. Nida)竟然开宗明义地说：
「For the most part the translator's lot
has been one of
little thanks, poor pay, and plenty of abuse.」
过了几页，在谈到译者「做翻译的动机」时，奈达兄再度语出惊人；
他说：「But since pay for translating is notoriously poor,
few persons engage in it merely for monetary reward.」
讲得真是太妙了
P.S.我还以为译者喊穷是台湾／华人世界的特有现象；
还是说，美国译者现在的待遇比奈达兄写这本书的时候好多了？
