Title: Mobile 2.0 - Disruptive Research Opportunities
Speaker: Dr. Mike Chen, Ludic Labs, Inc.
Time: 02:20pm, March 20 (Friday), 2009
Place: Room 102, CSIE building
全世界有超过三十亿的手机用户, 远超於网路用户的两倍. iPhone 3G, Android 和 Palm Pre 的上市,
不仅是一个新的商机, 更是学术研究能有突破性的进展的机会. 我将分享多年来在UC Berkeley, Intel Research,
和在Web 2.0 及 Mobile创业公司做手机研发的成果 , 并提出我对手机2.0趋势的看法.
Mobile phone is the most pervasive technology in the world. With more than 3 billion subscribers spread across both developed and developing regions, it is in use by 2x the number of Internet users and 3x the number of personal computer users world wide. Nevertheless, mobile phone has received relatively little attention from the research community, mainly because of the difficulty in developing and deploying software on these devices.
In this talk, I will present several mobile phone research projects and user studies that were conducted on closed mobile phone platforms. The first is low-cost and low-power GSM-based location sensing. The second is MyExperience, a framework that simplifies the collection of both sensor data and sensor-triggered user feedback. The third, UbiFit, explores the combination of wearable sensors that detect fitness-related activities and the use of mobile phone as an ambient display to increase user
awareness. In addition, I will share and contrast my experience working in academic research, a corporate research lab, and an early-stage Web 2.0 startup.
The recent introduction of iPhone 3G, Android, and other smartphones will dramatically change how mobile and ubiquitous computing research is conducted. For the first time in history, researchers have access to widely deployed open computing platforms that are always-on, always-connected, and in-situ. These platforms enable deployment opportunities that are orders of magnitude greater than before. Also, the sensing capabilities and the availability of social context on these platforms bring exciting
interdisciplinary research challenges.
