标题[英中] 请教文中一段话的翻译

大家好，有两个问题想请教各位......
1.以下文句应如何翻译：
We have briefly indicated how our own private life may have a strong impact
on the lives of others. If we leave unresolved the actual or potential sources
of social evil within ourselves, our external social activity will be either
futile or markedly incomplete. Therefore,if we are moved by a spirit of social
responsibility, we must not shirk the hard task of moral and spiritual
self-development. Preoccupation with social activities must not be made an
excuse or 『escape』 from the first duty, to tidy up one’s own house first.
我觉得整段翻译为：
我们已经简要指出个人生活对於其他人的生命会有重大影响，个人身上都有可以危害
到社会的实际或潜在根源，若不将其解决（去除），我们个人的外在活动不是（完全）
没有效用就是不完全。
因此，若我们被社会责任驱使向前，亦不能免除个人须在道德与精神上进化的困难任务。
专注於社会活动不能（因此）免除或脱离「先把自己的家清理乾净」这个首要责任。
2.以上文句最後一句引号中的『escape 』是名词，还是动词?
以上文句小弟自行研究已久，但仍没有肯定答案，敬请赐教，感激不尽 !

一、我刚刚发现：
「Therefore,if we are moved by a spirit of social responsibility, we must not
shirk the hard task of moral
and spiritual self-development」的翻译应该改为：
因此，若我们依着对於社会的责任感行事，即不能推卸个人须在道德与精神上成长的重
大责任。
二、kaifrankwind版友的译文，没有将「from the first duty」的意思翻出来，亦未将
「to tidy up one’s own house first」中的「first」翻出来。此外，「excuese」也
不是只能翻成「藉口」，不应完全照着英汉字典的解释翻译。希望能有高手出面指点。
