Udrih, the club’s first-round draft pick in the 2004 draft, broke the index finger on his left (shooting) hand in the first days of training camp and did not play in the Spurs’ seven pre-season games. Having lost his status as primary backup to Tony Parker to veteran Jacque Vaughn last season, Udrih’s injury and the competitive play of rookie Darius Washington in the pre-season combined to make him expendable. “This is a reflection on Darius’ play in the pre-season,” Spurs’ general manager R.C. Buford said. “It was unfortunate for Beno that he was injured. He wasn’t healthy and able to take advantage of Tony’s unavailability and Jacque’s injury, and Darius did take advantage. “This deal also provides us some roster flexibility, both now and going forward.” Indeed, since the Spurs received only a future draft pick, they were able to jettison Udrih’s $1.75 million contract. Washington’s contract is believed to be at or near the rookie minimum, which is $427,163 for the 2007-08 season. Udrih played in 73 regular season games last season, averaging 4.7 points and 1.7 assists in an average of 13.0 minutes per game. He saw action in only eight of the Spurs’ 20 playoff games and scored only two post-season points in a total of only 20 post-season minutes.
