Logic would suggest that Trenton Hassell would avoid the subject as much as
possible. Why ruin a night off watching Kobe Bryant or Michael Redd beat up
on somebody for four quarters when you know your turn is next?
But see, that's the point.
Trenton Hassell is the Wolves' designated defender. Outside with Allen
Iverson or Tracy McGrady one night. Inside with Andrei Kirilenko or Ruben
Patterson the next. There are nights when the 6-5 guard succeeds -- such as
when he helped hold Iverson and McGrady to a combined 11-for-40 in
back-to-back victories earlier this month -- and times when he becomes an
unwilling extra in a Sports Center highlight.
AK47或R.Patterson。
So Hassell will watch basketball just about every night. He'll pick a game
featuring an upcoming opponent, hunker down in front of the TV with his wife,
Tiffany, and take mental notes.
"She played, too, so she understands," Hassell said earlier this week. "So
we'll sit there, talk about a guy. Does he go left, or would he rather go
right? If he goes left is he going to pull up? If he goes right will he take
it to the basket? Where is his sweet spot?
Tuesday night's plan was to watch Kobe run with the Chicago Bulls. On
Wednesday, he matched up with Bryant and held the Lakers star to 24 points,
four under his average, although Bryant played only 30 minutes and sat out most
of the fourth quarter, when he often does the most damage.
Tonight, it's on to Milwaukee. Will it be Redd? Or Patterson, his defensive
assignment when the Wolves played the Bucks last weekend at Target Center?
Patterson?
It hasn't always been this way for Hassell, a scoring machine at Austin Peay
before he landed in Chicago as a rookie in the fall of 2001. It took some
time to realize that defense was going to keep him in the league.
Hassell credits two people for helping him the most: Charles Oakley, who was
with the Bulls that season near the end of his 19-year career; and Pete
Myers, a former player who joined the Bulls coaching staff in 2001.
They taught Hassell what it took to play defense -- mainly a hard nose and a
hard head.
"They would always say, no matter how good a player is, he puts his pants on
just like you, one leg at a time," Hassell said, then smiled. "Or, two legs
at a time, depending on how much you're in a rush. That stuck with me. You
have to stick with it, stick through it. He might have 35 points on you, but
the last play, when you need a stop, you have to get it."
According to teammate Mark Madsen, nobody watches more games than Hassell.
Wolves coach Dwane Casey said Hassell already has a good scouting report on
the player he'll be guarding before the coaches can hand one out.
"You have to have a mental toughness about you, and you have to have mental
discipline, to stay with the situation," Casey said. "Most good defenders
I've been around have had that. Gary Payton was that way. And so is Trenton."
All that said, there will be nights when nothing works. You might slow
Iverson and McGrady, only to have Tony Parker or Bryant give you fits.
"You have to understand that some nights will be better than others," Hassell
said. "They're going to score. People might turn on Sports Center and see
your guy got 30, 35. What they don't see is the percentage, the shots they
take to get that. If you make 'em take 30 shots to get 30 points, you did
your job.
"My mentality is, I'm going to come in here and make this person play as hard
as they can, make them take tough shots. ... If I do that, I did my job."
