07 June 2005 2003 French Open winner Juan Carlos Ferrero (Spain) claimed his first victory in his second appearance at Halle. He defeated Vladimir Voltchkov (Belarus) 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4. "I knew it wouldn’t just be a walk in the parc," said wild card entry Ferrero. Voltchkov, a semi-finalist at the 2000 All England Championships, showed good serve-and-volley skills in the first set. "It was almost impossible to get off good returns," insisted Ferrero. Nicolas Kiefer bowed out of his home tournament after a 7-6 (1), 3-6, 4-6 loss to Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia and Montenegro). Romanian Andrej Pavel, who resides just five minutes from the stadium, fell to Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, while Dick Norman won the all-Belgian meeting with Christophe Rochus 6-4, 6-3.
