The "suffering" is over (痛苦结束了)
Staff and Wire Reports
Tuesday, October 30, 2007
In what is described as a last-minute deal that only makes sense in the
convoluted world of NBA salary-cap specifics, the Spurs traded guard Beno
Udrih and cash to the Timberwolves for a protected 2008 second-round draft
pick that never will be delivered.
。
The Wolves then waived Udrih and the Spurs got some salary-cap relief.
Almost instantly, the suffering of Beno Udrih in a Spurs uniform has ended,
just as suddenly, he's also now a player without a team. Sources tell
SpursReport that Udrih may opt to leave the NBA to play in Europe as soon as
the broken finger that kept him out of training camp heals.
员,有某些消息告诉SpursReport(应该是马刺相关的媒体)说Udrih可能会选择离开NBA,
"The non-American (especially European players) in the NBA are discriminated
against and have to pay dearly for every mistake we make," Udrih said during
an interview in August.
Beno was candid and admitted that his time at the end of the bench in San
Antonio had gotten old.
"I knew I was in excellent form, but couldn't do anything because I wasn't
given a chance. You have no idea how much that influences one's psyche. After
good performances you are forced to seat on the bench and support you
teammates, tell them to get over mistakes and comfort them that it'll be
better next time. At the same time you know you could do a better job than
them if you would only get another chance - a chance that never came."
"This year I really suffered mentally," said Udrih. "After all that I
experienced while following the games from the bench somebody in Slovenia had
the audacity to write an article titled Beno reaches his second champions
title without breaking a sweat. This writer doesn't have the faintest idea
that I've attended all the training sessions that are even more strenuous for
the bench players. After the training is finished and the starting 5 and
their backups leave, the rest of us that are waiting for an opportunity have
to do another full hour of hard work in the training facility. In you head
you are full of doubt and keep wandering why you're not playing, you are
sweating rivers and then you read a title like that.
Udrih was given enough room to grow, but never quite matured into the player
the Spurs had hoped he would become when they drafted him as a 21-year-old
point guard, who had waited until he was automatically eligible to play in
the league before pursuing his dream.
The 6-4 native of Slovenia, could have entered the draft early. For years, he
was one of the hottest names circulating in the international scouting
community.
"Beno was highly regarded as a junior (under-18) player since he was already
starting at senior level," one international NBA scout said. "He was
considered the best point guard born in 1982 in Europe and one of the top
backcourt prospects in Europe."
No longer a teenage phenom, much of Udrih's mystery was gone. Unfortunately
for Udrih, mystery is what teams regularly consume on draft night. Boy
wonders are often more alluring than known quantities.
After trying to trade him several times last season, Udrih was told by the
Spurs that he would be given another chance this fall, but then he went down
with a broken index finger on his shooting hand and that opportunity
evaporated as well.
After seeing the hustle play of Darius Washington during the summer and
pre-season, a majority of Spurs fans polled on this site (75%) said they
would rather that the team keep Washington than Udrih. The Spurs agreed both
privately and publicly.
"Above all you must understand that in America basketball is a business where
there's no room for sentimentality," Udrih once said. "The spectators demand
a show and the owners demand a profit. Two seasons ago they brought Nick Van
Exel to the Spurs, a 13 years veteran NBA basketball player. Us the younger
players did not get a chance to play since the spectators demanded to see a
legend of basketball play who on top was also an American."

Many sentences in this article were badly written..."
