Djokovic v Tsonga set by set summary Sunday, 27 January, 2008 By M Trollope, C Okai, J Ranson & T Kelly Set 1 Djokovic began the stronger of the two men, breaking immediately to gain the ascendency. But rather than be discouraged in his first major final, Tsonga broke back in the next game to tie proceedings. Games went on serve for much of the first set, but despite the match being level on the scoreboard, Tsonga seemed to be the one in control. The Frenchmen routinely took the Serbian to deuce on his serve, and managed to accumulate a number of break points that compounded the pressure on the No.3 seed. Leading 5-4, Tsonga went up a level, and brought up a set point after rifling a winner past Djokovic at net after the Serbian had failed to put away a smash. He only needed the one opportunity, taking the set 6-4 and inciting a wild reaction from the full house at Rod Laver Arena. It was the first set Djokovic has lost all tournament. Set 2 Djokovic fought back in the second set, drastically reducing his unforced errors while mainting his aggresive style of play. Both players held serve confidently early on, as Tsonga looked to maintain his momentum from the previous set. The Frenchman pulled some impressive shots from the net in the 3rd game and Djokovic was left frustrated by some easy winners he missed. But the Serbian broke in the 7th game, moving his forehand into overdrive. It wasn't long then until the 3rd seed took the set 6-4 in 39 minutes. Djokovic carried his momentum into the third set, rushing Tsonga as the Frenchman began to drop his shoulders. Set 3 Both players held for 1-1 before a wide backhand from Tsonga handed the No. 3 seed a service break for 2-1. Djokovic began to construct his points with more clarity as errors crept into Tsonga's game. The Frenchman was unable to capitalise on a 15-30 opening during the sixth game, and Djokovic held for 4-2. After struggling to save six set points when down 3-5, Tsonga netted a volley to hand Djokovic the set 6-3. Set 4 In the fourth set Tsonga needed to up the anti and find the touch that saw him take the first set. But it was Djokovic who had the early advantage of serving first. Tsonga was the first to press, taking Djokovic to deuce in the fifth game but he couldn't capitalise as the No. 3 seed held serve. Tsonga pulled up gingerly in the fourth game however, it was the young Serbian who called the trainer for some treatment on his hamstring. Games went on serve at 5-4 in Djokovic's favour, but the Frenchman burdened all the pressure as he served to keep his title chase alive. Tsonga held his serve and worked a break point opportunity at 5-5 but failed to take his chance. The tension was getting to Djokovic and he was visibly unsettled on serve as he complained about crowd noise. Djokovic was doing himself no favours and the heavily pro-Tsonga crowd rallied behind the giant Frenchman as he absorbed, and seemed to revel under the pressure. So to a tie break it went and at 5-1 down Tsonga's dream run looked over as he double faulted for only the second time in the match.
