(Kathy Willens/AP) NEW YORK -- Leave it to the Giants' class clown, relief pitcher Steve Kline, to make Sunday's long day and infinitely longer weekend complete for fellow bullpenners -- and relative kids -- Jeremy Accardo and Jonathan Sanchez. After the 24-year-old Accardo earned his second Major League save in Sunday's combination spine-tickling and pratfall, 7-6 victory over the New York Mets in 12 innings and four hours, eight minutes, Kline dumped beer over the right- hander's head. Then he poured another frothing brew over Sanchez's head after the 23-year-old earned his first big-league victory in only his third appearance with a perfect 11th frame. It was a funny ending to a weird weekend in the Big Apple for all the Giants, who winged home to San Francisco with a 2-1 series win over the Mets that featured a rainout Friday night, a rain-delayed doubleheader Saturday and 32 innings of ball at Shea Stadium. "I hadn't planned on drinking on the plane, but that may change," said Accardo , who retired eight consecutive batters in the three games and over his last nine outings has logged a brilliant 0.71 ERA. "It was a long game and one of the greatest games I've ever been a part of," said Accardo, a non-drafted free agent signed in 2002 and now a leading contender as a future Giants closer. "I was excited, nervous, everything when I went out there." While being lights out this season, Accardo said he's hardly keeping detailed stats of his recent outstanding performances. "I haven't even thought about it once. Every day is a new day," he said. "I guess it is one of my better stretches, but tomorrow is a new day and you can't wake up cocky." So here it is in the bottom of the 12th before a rocking crowd of 48,791, most screaming for victory, and Accardo comes jogging in from the bullpen. Heart thumping. But mind clear. "I was thinking I was going to make them beat me -- I wasn't going to beat myself," said Accardo, the last bullpenner left standing in the 12th. "I had a save opportunity last year [in Washington], and I remember what happened and learned from that." Accardo blew that save chance, but not this one. Sanchez still has a baby-faced look, and why not? The left-hander was called up from Double-A Connecticut on May 26 and has retired all eight of the Major League batters he's opposed over three outings. "I didn't know I was going to get in the game because I pitched yesterday," said Sanchez. "I wanted to get a win, but I didn't know it would be in the 12th with the game tied. It feels great. I'm happy." It could have been overwhelming, but he retired Jose Reyes and Paul Lo Duca on groundouts, then got Carlos Beltran on a flyout to left. Kline said "it was beautiful for those guys" getting beer shampoos, but more importantly, the Giants return to San Francisco feeling good for the seven- game homestand. "We went into the Marlins and didn't play so well," said Kline. "We got beat twice and came here to a team that beat us two out of three at our place. To start winning games that are close, that's how you find out how good you are. "Our young kids pitched well." The worst moment of Sunday's contest was in the 10th with the Giants holding a 6-4 lead and Armando Benitez -- a former Met who drew the wrath of New York fans with some poor big-game efforts -- eager to do well. But solo homers by Jose Valentn and Lastings Milledge tied it, and Benitez would walk off the mound to thunderous boos and derision. Still, there would be redemption in the 12th when Pedro Feliz, 0-for-4 entering an at-bat against Heath Bell, lined a sharp single into left-center, scoring Lance Niekro with the game-winning run. "It was time to do it," said Feliz. "It won't happen every day, but I was thinking about the 0-for-4. I got to get a hit, and I finally found a way." Almost lost in the frenzy of the final six innings was a decent but no- decision performance by starter Matt Morris, now 1-6 with two NDs in his last nine outings but still pitching relatively well. He had a quality start but lost at Florida on May 29 then gave up only three runs over six frames again Sunday. Good effort, same results. "It mirrors the game last week," said Morris, 3-6 overall. "The solo home run, the two-out base hit and giving up three runs isn't bad, but when you only score one, it looks worse than it should. "I gave them a chance and we were able to battle back. Too bad we had to go so deep in the game, but sometimes it works out that way." Manager Felipe Alou used 22 players overall, with only Jason Schmidt, Noah Lowry and Matt Cain not seeing action. Even Jamey Wright, who pitched Saturday night, pinch-hit in the top of the 12th. Rich Draper is a reporter for MLB.com.
