真的很长... 原文 http://blog.roodo.com/megadave/archives/8682847.html ============================================================================== 从文章封面大的夸张的 Album Cover 以及赞颂的标题，你应该可以知道我已经中 Savatage 的毒很深了。所以本篇的结论就是 (如果不想看下面长篇介绍的话)：赶快买 来听就对了，绝对是值得收藏的专辑。 Savatage？好歹我听金属也八年了，这个乐团我还真的没什麽听过... 金属版上也没有什 麽讨论，但我会知道有这个乐团是因为 Megadeth 的 「The World Needs A Hero」专辑 侧标中，介绍新吉他手 Al Pitrelli 是从 Savatage 挖来的，除此之外，我连 Savatage 是玩什麽曲风、哪一国的我都没概念。 哈哈，我真是孤陋寡闻，这麽棒的乐团现在才认识，好久没有这种听一张专辑就深深中毒 ，然後就疯狂的想收完其它张专辑的冲动，上一次是 Opeth，再上一次是 Metallica，最 早的是 Bryan Adams。 Overview Main Lineup Jon Oliva - Vocal & Piano Criss Oliva - Guitar Steve Wacholz - Drums Johnny Lee Middleton - Bass Chris Caffery - Guitar & KB　*in Gutter Ballet Savatage 的乐风是 Progressive/Power/Opera Metal，和另外两个美国前卫大哥 Queensryche, Fates Warning 同时期，都是在前卫金属正蓬勃发展时的先锋。乐团的创 立者是 Jon Oliva (Vocal/Piano), Criss Oliva (Guitar) 这对兄弟俩，早期深受 Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen 等乐团的影响，前几张专辑有这些乐团的影子 却还没有建立自己独特的风格，走的是 Power/Speed Metal 乐风 (其实我前三张都没听 过啦)，直到遇到 Paul O'Neill 这个伯乐制作人，帮他们找到属於自己的成功道路，也 就是後期着名的融合古典旋律与剧情式的前卫金属。 Paul 从 「Hall of the Mountain King」这张专辑开始，每张专辑都由他操刀。山大王 的大厅这张专辑可以说是 Savatage 往前卫迈进的转折点，以钢琴和古典乐融入美式强力 金属的风格也逐渐成形。这张专辑有着爽快的吉他 riff，鼓点变拍以及 Jon 飞行在云端 的声线，钢琴与交响乐也在许多歌曲中出现，整张专辑听来十分爽快，旋律也很令人印象 深刻。 有了山大王这张成功的转变，「Gutter Ballet」更将钢琴与古典乐运用的更臻完美，出 现了 Savatage 第一张经典专辑。Jon 优美的钢琴旋律与古典乐的编曲风格，加上夸张地 歌剧式演唱，以及 Criss 独具个人风格的吉他演奏，都是这张专辑成功的因素。专辑里 多少优美的旋律都成为乐迷心中永远的纪念... 因为 Criss 在 93 年因车祸丧生，如此 动人旋律都只能成为追忆，或许因为这样，Savatage 也多了点传奇的色彩。 这两张专辑逐渐酝酿接下来这张作品的成功，「Streets: A Rock Opera」可说是 Savatage 最佳的代表作，从这张专辑开始认识 Savatage 是个非常好的开始。 Streets Lineup Jon Oliva - Vocal & Piano Criss Oliva - Guitar Steve Wacholz - Drums Johnny Lee Middleton - Bass 「Streets」 是一张概念性的专辑，故事内容是根据他们的制作人 Paul 的着作，Criss 觉得把这个故事用音乐呈现会是个不错的想法，这张专辑於是诞生。在这张专辑发行的前 三年，Queensryche 的「Operation: Mindcrime」可能也是很好的启发，让许多乐团都用 音乐呈现剧情，但说到概念性专辑，看到的不外乎是 The Who, Pink Floyd, Queensryche, Dream Theater 等乐团的那四张专辑，我到没看过「Streets」和上列专辑 齐名过。或许和历史重要性与乐风突破性有很大关系，「Streets」似乎称不上跨时代的 经典作品，即使如此，还是无法掩灭这张专辑散发的光芒，以及「Streets」那触动人心 的感动。 故事的主轴是一个摇滚巨星 D.T. Jesus (D.T.是 Down Town 或 De-Tox 的缩写，也有人 说 D.T. Jesus 其实就是 Jon Oliva 的投影) 的兴衰殒落，故事的场景在充满繁华与堕 落的纽约街头，所以这张专辑也以「Streets」为名，我觉得是非常适切的，Jon 也说他 非常不喜欢 "A Rock Opera" 这个注解，反而显得画蛇添足且破坏气氛。说到这里，你可 能会想到 「The Wall」也是一个摇滚巨星 Pink 的故事，「The Wall」所探讨的个人精 神层面与社会问题都有很深刻的描写，且是 Waters 的成长经验的缩影，在故事复杂与深 度上，「Streets」显然是比较容易吸收的，就像看出大众电影，剧情是不需要你苦恼推 敲的，重点是他呈现的效果。既然是个摇滚歌剧，剧情与音乐的结合是非常的重要的，我 觉得这个连结 Savatage 做得非常好，听者很容易地被带入主角的情绪，高兴、愤怒、悲 伤、没落、希望都随着 Jon 戏剧性的歌声与适时的音乐搭配而展露无遗，甚至在一首歌 里面就可以尝一次酸甜苦辣的感受。而其他摇滚歌剧会让人挑剔的一点是，音乐与剧情的 连结性是否平衡，若只一味炫技，每首歌都来个精采的乐器独奏，但似乎在剧情的情绪中 是不太必要的，忘记情尽乎辞才是最适当的表现。 这张专辑的名称原本是想取作「Gutter Ballet」，是上一张专辑的名称也是 Paul 原着 的书名，不过後来当然没有这样取。而原本这张专辑是打算当作双 CD 发行，但唱片公司 显然不喜欢这样的想法，於是有很多歌曲没有收录在「Streets」里，团员对这样的发行 不甚满意。而似乎也没有机会看到完整版「Streets」的发行了，因为多数没有收录的歌 曲都拿去给後面专辑用了，所以也只有 Savatage 知道双 CD 的感觉会是怎样吧。但在 1997 年重新发行的版本，多收录一首 "Desiree"，这首歌当时没收录在单 CD 版本，如 此动人心弦的歌曲如果能放在完整的「Streets」里面该有多好呢。 在「Streets」发行之後，Jon 就离团专心搞自己的 side-project 乐团 Doctor Butcher 以及百老汇音乐 Romanov，後来 Criss 和 Paul 找来了 Zachary "Zak" Stevens 担任主唱。不过 93 年 Criss 意外逝世後，Jon 又回到 Savatage 担任键盘及 曲目编写的工作 (我想也是要维持 Savatage 来纪念自己的弟弟吧)。 听这张专辑犹如在听百老汇歌剧 Live CD 版，但闭上眼睛，彷佛瞬间置身於纽约黑暗潮 湿的街道，D.T. Jesus 的故事就在眼前上演... 太阳下山了，街灯一盏一盏亮了，小孩 集群嬉闹玩乐，而阴暗的角落有个落寞的人... 1. Streets 一开始是儿童唱诗班优美的合唱 (引用 Mozart - The Magic Flute)，似乎是附近教堂传 出的声音，接着晶莹剔透的声音透露出整个黑夜的宁静与神秘，D.T. Jesus 狰狞的声音 画破这宁静，接下来是超厚重的吉他 riff，我觉得是整张专辑最沉重的 riff，非常震撼 。这首歌将整张专辑的场景交代的很清楚，D.T. Jesus 的憎恨多少也反映纽约的现况。 These streets Glitter in the dark Don't sleep Red eyes sunken and stark Dream deep In her arms where you are safe These streets Never sleep still never wake D.T. Jesus 强烈咆啸的声音与合唱团似乎进行激烈的控诉，充分表现 D.T. Jesus 沦落 街头的愤怒与堕落。最後的结尾又回到清脆的玻璃音与孩童天真的玩乐声音，D.T. Jesus 似乎已经安静下来，我也以为差不多结束了，但随着吉他扰人的乱窜，D.T. Jesus 再度爆发... 2. Jesus Saves 接下来场景似乎来到车水马龙的街道上，一开始是一个游荡街友 (Bum) 一个人的对话， 内容是跟一个陌生人介绍他的朋友 D.T. Jesus，一个当地的毒贩... 接着吉他 riff 出现，Jon 开始唱出 D.T. Jesus 的兴衰故事，他曾是红极一时的摇滚巨 星，台下乐迷叫嚣的 "Jesus Saves" 曾经震耳欲聋，但事情却慢慢变了样... So the dice were cast Today became the past Jesus just disappeared He was headed for New York Or so his little label thought And there he gave away the years Last seen drinking wine Beneath a flashing sign Promising salvation to strays D.T. Jesus 从纽约城市中消失。 3. Tonight He Grins Again 这首歌一开始就是柔美的钢琴声，Jon 唱出 D.T. Jeuse 的孤寂与落寞，相当动人心弦 ... "Time Time Time Again" 那段的激昂与 "Tonight He Grins Again" 的无奈，这两 句歌词唱的实在太销魂了... Nighttime again Seems I'm my only friend Wander the streets all alone The lost in search of his own Time and time and time again I'm just looking for a friend But no one seems to be around Except this monkey that I've found Still he is my only friend And tonight he grins again 4. Strange Reality 奇怪的真实感，对自我的迷惑无所适从，"这会是我吗?" Wake every morning I don't know where I've been All my excuses Showing strain wearing thin Am I losing my way This strange insanity An illusion away Is this reality Could that be me 5. A Little too Far 听过这首歌的人还没有不被感动到的... (样本数一) 整首歌由 Jon 自弹自唱，优美的钢 琴旋律与充满盼望的嗓音，我们似乎越来越来远了，能否回到从前... 听了整颗心都融化 了... With years to burn And years to trash Living lies based on flash But somehow reaching for the stars I think we went a bit too far Got to get back Got to get back I never meant to take it this far And all those things we thought we'd learned As we watched our bridges burn While standing in the afterglow I guess we gave them quite a show 就是这句 "Got to get back"... 这麽简单却动人的旋律，第一次就深深地感动我... 6. You're Alive D.T. Jesus 回到这个他曾经埋葬过去的地方，等着他的却是新闻媒体无情的讪笑，但歌 迷却给他最温暖的怀抱... D.T. Jesue 尽管往前吧，忘记以前的种种，你已经复活了。 When you're skating on ice too thin to take it You got to move fast or else you break it So throw back your hair and feel the wind rush by So people take care when you're chasing a dream in the night That the walls of the past don't interrupt your flight Never stop never turn Never look never learn So they say But somewhere in time we all pay For yesterday D.T. Jesus Alive!!! 歌曲很短很快，交代剧情的功用比较大。 7. Sammy and Tex 这首歌又快歌词又多，剧情交代很多，而音乐上很有速度与力道。剧情是 Sammy 跟 D.T. Jesus 要钱，因为 D.T. Jesus 之前欠他一屁股债，本金加利息越滚越多。Sammy 与 D.T. Jesus 激烈的扭打起来，直到 Tex (应该是 D. T. Jesus 的朋友吧) 进门来， 抓住 Sammy 的喉咙就像衣架上的大衣，似乎 Tex 占了优势，但却被 Sammy 暗藏的刀子 刺死... D.T. Jesus 眼见朋友被杀害，心中痛苦扭绞，对 Tex 的死去无法承受... 8. St. Patrick's Hey there Lord it's me I wondered if you're free Or not asleep This just won't keep It seems I just don't see 主阿，你能听到我的呼唤吗？为何我们所期愿的所渴望的都像无声的文字消逝於空气中？ 为什麽让我们的梦想碰面而你却不帮一点忙？你说我们要付出但你却甚麽都不做，只是个 死雕像？你夺去我所有的名声但谁会收到责难，全是那些不该受到责难的人阿！我可否厌 倦你不相信你？但我求你让时间回到最初，改变整个命运，解释这一切... 主阿... D.T. Jesus 从寄望主到怒骂主最後又只能乞求主，这种求助无援的无助感很深刻的在歌 曲里面表现，音乐也随着 D.T. Jesus 的情绪起伏，尤其在怪罪主的那个桥段，交响乐如 大雨磅礡洒下，情绪到达最高点，却又马上回到无助的乞求，情绪转换之激烈实在精采。 9. Can You Hear Me Now I have walked this stage As the music played They knew every word But they never heard For they never changed It's all very strange As I'm standing here Contemplating years And can you hear me now Or are there just too many doors Between then and now For me to ever reach on through And pull you back somehow But that don't happen anymore Still in the dark I'd swear I hear you calling 你是否能听到我的声音，或者我们之间有太多紧闭的门。这歌充满奇怪的感觉。 10. New York City Don't Mean Nothing 纽约市什麽也不是。一开始以空心吉他开场，唱着自己在纽约的现状，接着情绪直转，大 声挞伐纽约市的不是，不要相信这里的花花绿绿的一切。或许纽约市民比较有感触吧。 You see New York City Don't mean nothing Just a good place when you're running Light that cut so bright they make you bleed Never sleep alone on the subways Never walk alone on the tracks Never take a ride to the edge of your mind Not unless you have a ticket back Don't believe in T.V. preachers Don't believe in talk show stars Never follow trends if they turn on your friends Just to be sure you know who your friends are 11. If I Go Away 又是一首优美的抒情歌，优美的钢琴与哀伤的嗓音，再度感动人心。 If I go away What would still remain of me? The ghost within your eyes The whisper in your sighs You see Believe And I'm always there 如果我走了，有什麽东西会留下吗? 相信我，我总是在这里。 Forever is a long time they say Maybe some day I'll meet you there If you've time to spare Tell me then Where I can go Where they won't know Who I have been Can we start again 永远是很难预期的事，或许有天我们再相遇，能否重新开始？ 真是一首无敌情歌大芭乐，硬汉柔情更加刻骨铭心阿，Criss 的吉他旋律真是要人记住他 一辈子阿。 12. Agony and Ecstacy 痛苦与狂喜。D.T. Jesus 操控着歌迷的灵魂，花光你的钱来买票吧，听我在台上高声歌 唱，灵魂都交给我吧，你们需要我的，我是你们的痛苦与狂喜。这首歌是非常爽的金属歌 ，厚重的 power chord 与像发了疯的吉他乱窜，加上 Jon 嚣张的唱腔，实在很爽。这首 歌也是最後一首激烈的金属歌，後面几首都营造完美的结束。 Listen now the time is right And what a way to start the night Spend your money endlessly Another grand insanity So D.T. here is the plan I'll make your brain a rubber band Time to stretch it out and see Agony and Ecstasy Ecstasy Feel my whisper through your haze of pain Feel the calling of a neon vein I'm the name upon your soul's marquee I am agony and ecstasy And just remember If you ever need me I'm here 好心提醒一下，如果你们需要我，我便在此。 14. Heal My Soul 又是一首抒情的小品，歌曲旋律是引用传统 Welsh 摇篮曲，加上唱诗班优雅轻吟的合声 ，有着抚慰心灵的安全感。Jon 又再次展现像 "A Little too Far" 那般的美妙，简单却 又深植人心。 Father hear me I am tired Shall I waken In thy home Hold me closer I am trying Sweet Lord Jesus Heal my soul 主阿，治癒我的灵魂吧... 多麽虔诚的呼唤... 15. Somewhere in Time 这首歌是倒数第二首，此时 D.T. Jesus 的心智渐渐平抚，也有重新出发的动力与渴望， 从歌曲中展翅飞翔般的浩瀚交响乐便能清楚感受到，後半段的吉他 riff 也是振奋人心， 似乎为 D.T 的再出发鼓舞伴奏，听了都替 D.T. Jesus 感到欣慰呢... 如此积极的歌是 为了带出最後一首宏伟的终曲，我所听过最棒的终曲... But then the years are forgiving If God's forgiving in kind Perhaps we'll all find our answers somewhere in time 感谢主的宽恕，我们总会找到最终的答案。或许主早就知道答案了，时间会说明一切，最 终我们会了解... Believe "这或许是 Savatage 最棒的一首歌吧"，我还没听完所有 Savatage 的作品，但许多乐迷 已经提供了这样的赞叹... 这首歌的副歌其实在 "When the Crowds Are Gone" 这首歌就 出现过了，再次听到感动更深。上一首歌 D.T. Jesus 在唱这首歌，好像有点移情作用了，我要克制一下，不然就变成 写人生感触的作文了，呵。 这首歌真的很棒，是我听过最棒的结尾曲，为这张专辑划下完美的句点。对我来说，一张 经典专辑不需要每首歌每段旋律都好听，太完美总是不完美，而这种能够感动到我的东西 才是我最想要的，即使只是突然的感觉。Savatage 在这张专辑里，音乐与意境的融合相 当搭配，也是有些歌感觉普普，像是几首交代剧情的歌，但这都无所谓，我还是爱死这张 专辑了，让我想一直去了解，让我想用心聆听，慢慢追寻，这样的认识过程也还蛮难得的 不是吗？ 最後，All I ask of you is - 赶快把这张专辑买来听吧!!!
